About the mention of Goldscope Mine - I don't know of gold ever being deliberately mined anywhere in the Lakes. Only very small amounts have ever been found anywhere there. The name "Goldscope" comes from the original German "Gottesgab" (God's Gift) (mentioned in several books on Lake District mining). It's probably wrong to say it was mined for silver, too. Silver was often a valuable by-product, but never the main reason for any Lake District mine. Major work stopped in 1864, for more or less the reasons mentioned (continuation would've required expenditure on pumping equipment), but small efforts carried on until about 1920.
