changed the greenbush link as it was busted new link is to MBTA link http://www.mbta.com/projects_underway/greenbush.asp MC

The year of the town's incorporation in the sidebar (1634) does not agree with the year in the text (1635). The Town of Hingham website (link on page) gives the correct year as 1635. Changed.

What's the deal with Bob Graham?[edit]

Why is Bob Graham listed as a Hinghamite? According to his article, we was born in Miami; his father was a Florida state senator; he attended Miami High from 1951 to 1955; His political career was entirely in Florida; and no mention of Massachusetts is made in the article. What's the deal, is this a mistake or what? Herostratus (talk) 23:12, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

According to articles like this, it's legit. AJD (talk) 03:06, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This doesn't seem clear at all. The article you cite says that he wanted to be "near" his daughter, who does live in Hingham, but "near" does not mean he lives in the same town... the article says "He spends nights at Mather House, one of the undergraduate dorms at Harvard"; whether that means he lives there I don't know, but it certainly doesn't argue for Hingham as a domicile. Herostratus (talk) 18:11, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This article indicates that Graham bought a house in Hingham to live in for a few months a year. AJD (talk) 05:45, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hingham Residents[edit]

BD--72.74.248.75 (talk) 05:56, 12 April 2008 (UTC) Another one time Hingham resident was Robert Holmes, guitarist for the 1980's Boston Band, 'Til Tuesday. Their first hit Voices Carry, Occupied a spot at about #5 on the Billboard Chart in the spring of 1985. The song was blocked from rising any higher by Springstien, Madonna, & Michael Jackson![reply]

Distance from Boston?[edit]

A editor changed "Hingham is located 8 miles southeast of the Boston city limits." to "Hingham is located 9 miles southeast of the Boston city limits." But I haven't been able to raise her or get a cite for this. I'm leery of unexplained and uncited small changes to numbers by new editors.

I've got the town government web site saying it's "15 miles south of Boston" (and on the same page they later say "15 miles southeast" which is more accurate, as far as direction). this decribes Hingham as "about 11.9 miles from Boston", this says that Wompatuck State Park (which is partly in Hingham) is "about 20 miles south of Boston". This says that Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, which is more or less in the middle of Boston, is 13.66 miles from the city center of Hingham. This says that Hingham is "Located just 15 miles from Boston", and so does this, while this says it's "Just 20 miles from Boston", and this says "approximately 20 miles south of Boston". According to this, the driving distance is 25 miles. And yadda yadda yadda.

So my questions are:

  • Is the northern limit of the Hingham municipal limits 8 miles from the southern limit of Boston's, or 9 miles?
  • How can this be determined? I'm not going out there with a tape measure if that's what you're thinking.
  • Who cares? Isn't the distance from town center to town center (the Boston Stone in the case of Boston, I guess) the operative factor? I think that either "15 miles southeast" or "20 miles southeast" or whatever it is a more accurate description of how far away most locals would describe the town as being.

But if we want to use the town-limit to town-limit method, we need to know what it is. For the time being, until we can get a cite on the 8-vs-9 mile distance, I've scrubbed it down to just "Hingham is located southeast of Boston." Better no info than false info. Heh. Well, here's a map, with several points marked. The as-the-crow-flies distance between the Back River bridge and the Neponset River bridge is 6.1 miles. The distance from Boston City Hall to Hingham Town Hall is 12.7 miles. Google Maps says the by-road distances are 6.8–8 miles and 17.6–23.3 miles respectively (depending on route). The closest between city/town limits is out in Boston Harbor: 1.6 miles! The distance from island to island is a bit longer.

Famous Hingham Residents[edit]

As I reviewed the famous Hingham residents, I noticed that you forgot the first NHL Hockey player to come from Hingham. He played for the Toronto Maple Leafs 1975-78 and LA Kings 1978-80. He attended Hingham High School and graduated 1972, his name is Kurt Walker and he should clearly be recognized as Hingham's first NHL Hockey Player.

Census info[edit]

Why is the census information from 2000? Isn't there anything more recent? The most recent income info is from 2007, before the recession. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rosekelleher (talkcontribs) 14:33, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
