By the late 90s, the genre had diverged into two distinct styles. One group of artists included many who had previously recorded in hip hop-soul, and had become the new pop-inflected sound of urban contemporary into the next decade. This style lacked the hardcore and solful urban "grinding" feel on which hip hop-soul relied, and focused more on solo artist as the 2000s progressed. Recordings in this style are sometimes indistingishable from urban pop, with less imphasis on soulful singing. Some artists who have succesfully recorded in this style include Usher, Beyoncé and Destiny's Child, Sisqó and Dru Hill, Brandy, R. Kelly, Aaliyah, TLC, and Ashanti, "the Princess of Hip Hop and R&B".Some artists, such as Alicia Keys, mixed the style with neo soul, a cross between hip hop beats and 1970s style soul instrumentation and singing. Many artists of this genre have a bohemian hip hop or Native Tongues.

"Hip-hop soul" refers to a very specific sub-genre of R&B/soul music, songs like "Real Love" by Mary J. Blige and "Tell Me" by Groove Theory that actually use pure hip-hop beats for the backing of sung vocals The music of Usher, Brandy, Dru Hill, etc. is not hip-hop soul; it is simply contemporary R&B. "Hip-hop soul has not actually existed since about 1997, when it evolved into neo soul" I wouildn't say that. "Hip-Hop soul" stil exists with people like Amerie, Keisha Cole, Fantasia and Trey Songs. And I think Hip-hop soul deals with more than the "beat" used behind the vocals...although that is just my opinion 4.249.27.143 20:19, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You're right; Amerie and a few others brought the sound back. I don't know about Fantasia, however; I've heard her album, and its sounds like standard R&B to me. I don't hear any of the rough-hewn beats you hear on Amerie's or Keyshia Cole's releases. --FuriousFreddy 01:09, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

inaccuracies[edit]

Anthony Hamilton is in no way a hip-hop soul artist. He is firmly in the neo-soul camp. I also agree with the above comment that hip-hop soul is specifically soul using overtly hip-hop beats/instrumentalisation. Hence most of the artists listed here are in fact contemporary R&B.

Hip Hop soul is a sub-genre of contemporary R&B. contemporary artists displaying a resurgence in hip hop soul include Ashanti with "Foolish" for certain, because of it's emphasis on the groove. That's what the subgenre was all about. That was the major diference between it and New jack's wild beats. Its important to note "the groove"_remember? The beats were often completly overriden by the groove. Without that grinding base line, it's not hip hop soul.--J. Daily 06:14, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removed...[edit]

Removed Destiny's Child & Ciara -- they are NOT Hip Hop soul, they're contemporary R&B; also removed Rihanna; she's not even contemporary R&b, she's pop. And moved Beyonce to the bottom; though some of her songs may be considered Hip Hop soul, she's hardly the best example of it.

Original research and sources[edit]

Currently, the article has two inline citations, and those are for a photo caption, not for the article's text. Furthermore these merely corroborate Mary J. Blige's status within this style.
