George D. Zamka[edit]

According to George Zamka's Wikipedia entry he is of Polish ancestry, not Hispanic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by ProdigySportsman (talkcontribs) 20:26, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Wkipedia is not a reliable source since anyone can post whatever they please at any given time. NASA is a reliable source: NASA Hispanic Astronauts, plus "Hispanic military heroes", by:

Virgil Fernandez; Publisher: Austin, TX : VFJ Pub., 2006.; ISBN: 0967587611. Zamka's mother is Columbian, thereby making him of Hispanic descent on her side, while his father is Polish, also making him of Polish ancestry. Tony the Marine (talk) 21:02, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    • While I can't argue your reference of "Hispanic military heroes," I do not see the NASA source. The link to the list of astronauts on that page is of all astronauts. Please provide direct link.--ProdigySportsman (talk) 21:41, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • No, the NASA link is a list of it's Hispanic astronauts only. It clearly states "NASA Hispanic Astronauts" plus, "crc.ohio.gov/pdf/EducationMaterials/HHMColoringBook.pdf National Hispanic Heritage", The other look of Columbia, Austin Community College, Plus Zamka was featured in the June 2003 issue of Hispanic Magazine along with fellow astronauts Ellen Ochoa, Fernando “Frank” Caldeiro, Franklin Chang-Díaz, Carlos Noriega, Danny Olivas, and Michael “L.A.” López-Alegría. • Another thing, to bring this issue to an end Zamka himself made a statement in a preflight interview in regard to his Columbian heritage when he was asked "If you could tell me place where you grew up, how, how the people and that place influence you"

"My mother is Colombian. It was living on the economy in the civilization as a teenager. Although I knew Spanish somewhat I had to learn fast in order to get along with the kids. I had cousins there that helped me with the transitions and their friends were my friends and we all got along. It was, it was happy time, but it was, it was a tough adaptation, to be an American kid and then suddenly become a Colombian kid and learned soccer, and learn all the colloquialisms and how to get by as a kid. But I do remember sitting in a classroom one time -- went to a school that spoke both English and Spanish and some of the classes were conducted in Spanish. I don’t remember what kind of class it was but I was taking notes down and, I thought, "My goodness, I am glad I understand Spanish."

preflight interview

It doesn't get better then that. Tony the Marine (talk) 22:48, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Puerto Rico[edit]

Somewhere we need to mention (footnoted) that Puerto Ricans have usually been eligible for appointment to the service academies. By quota, as are the states. This accounts for the large percentage of Puerto Ricans who were admirals in the article (as opposed to say, Mexican-Americans). Student7 (talk) 12:35, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notables[edit]

These really need to be confined to notable graduates not just every person with a hispanic background. It implies that there are few real notables among hispanics which is untrue. Student7 (talk) 00:10, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I rm WP:NN. These were reverted. There needs to be some overweaning reason for their listing here. See WP:LISTPEOPLE. Every Hispanic that ever graduated (or, in one case killed while doing nothing in particular) cannot be inserted.

Editors needs to confine this list to meaningful information, otherwise, it's a list of "everybody that ever lived" and conveys no meaning to the reader. Student7 (talk) 21:29, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Largest minority[edit]

True, cited material may still be off WP:TOPIC as was the observation (with statistics) that Hispanics are the largest minority in the US. This may be appropriately worded with perhaps a link and an offhand reference. But this is not a US Census report, it is about the Naval Academy. Student7 (talk) 19:33, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
