– By WP:DEFINITE and WP:CONCISE, the use of "the" should be dropped from these titles because it simply is not necessary to convey the topics of the articles. Additionally, the use of the definite article in these cases is clunky and should not be in use per WP:NATURALNESS. For now, we can disregard the "political correctness" argument that using the definite article to refer to ethnic groups in certain cases is "othering" and a social wrong. While I personally think this argument is compelling, the true test of whether referring to "Mexican Americans" with "the" is acceptable can simply be conducted by looking at the wider media: In 2019, news articles mentioning "the Mexican Americans" were a very small fraction (1.0%) of articles mentioning "Mexican Americans". By WP:COMMONNAME, the titles of the articles should be changed to reflect this usage by the media. Mysterymanblue (talk) 21:27, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support 100% (and Support other similar moves) per WP:DEFINITE, WP:CONCISE, and especially WP:NATURALNESS and WP:CONSISTENT. You wouldn't say "I learned about the history of the Americans", you say "history of Americans" – and this isn't any different! (You're right, it sounds almost pejorative and othering with a "the".) Edits to the Article[edit]

Hi everyone! I've noticed that the "history" and "culture" sections of the article could use more information and a more clear breakdown/presentation of that information using headers. For the history section, I would like to add information about the 1930s and 40s, specifically about the post-WWI Americanization programs pushed on Mexican immigrants that were caused by midwestern Protestants shaping early Los Angeles culture, as well as the differing attitudes toward Mexican immigrants from settled Americans, which influenced Mexican American quality of life. For this, I will use the source Becoming Mexican American: Ethnicity, Culture, and Identity in Chicano Los Angeles, 1900-1945, published by Oxford University Press, and written by George J. Sanchez, a professor of American Studies and Ethnicity and History at USC. I would also like to add an "early 20th century" subheading to the history section to make it more organized. Using the same source, I would also like to add information on the early formation of Mexican American identity and the early Mexicanization that predated the Chicano movement of the 60s to the culture section of the article. Altogether, I will add about 200-300 words. If anyone wants to comment on these changes, please let me know on this Talk Page or on my Talk Page. Thank you so much!
