I suggest this article be merged with that of History of modern Penang or History of modern Penang can be redirected to this article because that article is very difficult to understand and look like a fiction rather than encyclopedic material.Wai Hong 12:23, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I vote to support the merge from history of modern Penang to here, since this article is more developed. I have worked to trim the other article and will perform the merge if there are no objections.Sarawakgirl
  • I have include some new info regarding the history of Penang especially regarding the nagara Kedah. The state of Kedah does not exist than. There exist only the Raja of Kota Setar then who became the Sultan of Kedah that we know today. Refer to "The Laws of Nagara Kedah" dated AD 812.nailongmazlan

Penang Riots of 1867[edit]

The Penang Riots of 1867 involved four secret societies: the Hokkien-based Kien Teik (also known as Tua Pek Kong) Society which teamed up with the Muslim-based Bendera Merah (Red Flag) society while the Cantonese-based Ghee Hin society had another Muslim-based Bendera Putih (White Flag) society as its ally. Attempted Secession of Penang[edit]

I recall reading that there was an attempt by some groups to push for the secession of Penang from the Federation of Malaya in 1948 and a vote to do so was narrowly defeated 15-10 in 1949. This was 1 of the few attempts by states to secede from Malaya (and later Malaysia) including Johor, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak. A good source would be A Modern History of Southeast Asia (ISBN 9781860643545). Anybody up to including this narrative in the article? - Bob K | Talk 15:34, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
