Typo?[edit]

"... after 1887 the city's economy experienced accelerated growth. The growth was interrupted by yellow fever outbreaks in the 1790s". "after 1887", then "was interrupted in 1790s"?

"Once the American Civil War began in 1860"? began in 1860 or 1861?

Successful good article nomination[edit]

I am glad to say that this article which was nominated for good article status has succeeded. This is how the article, as of July 12, 2007, compares against the six good article criteria:

1. Well written?: definently. It is detialled and informative where necessary
2. Factually accurate?: well sourced, except for the introduction
3. Broad in coverage?: yes
4. Neutral point of view?: yes
5. Article stability? seems to be at this time
6. Images?: yes, could use more, but overall there are images where there should be.

If you feel that this review is in error, feel free to take it to a GA review. Thank you to all of the editors who worked hard to bring it to this status. — SefringleTalk 07:59, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GA Sweeps Review: Pass[edit]

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria. I'm specifically going over all of the "World History-Americas" articles. I believe the article currently meets the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. I have made minor corrections and have included several points below that would benefit from an inline citation.

  1. "Shortly after receiving the charter, Penn said he would lay out "a large Towne or Citty in the most Convenient place upon the [Delaware] River for health & Navigation." This quote needs an inline citation directly after the statement.
  2. "Along with the city's "dullness" Philadelphia was known for its corruption. The Republican controlled political machine, run by Israel Durham, permeated all parts of city government. One official estimated that US$5 million was wasted every year from graft in the city's infrastructure programs" It would be beneficial to add another inline citation directly after these statements.

Altogether the article is well-written and is still in great shape after its passing in July. Continue to improve the article making sure all new information is properly sourced and neutral. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. I have updated the article history to reflect this review. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 01:59, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The "large Towne or Citty" quote is via Weigley 1982:4. His endnote cites a Dunn and Dunn, eds., The Papers of William Penn, 1680-1684, p. 98. I added an inline citation as simply Weigley 1982:4. The citation system in this article (although perfectly nice enough) probably currently is not quite up to the level of citing through Weigley 1982 back to its endnotes in each case where the thing that we're citing him on, he cited someone else on. That is, this article in these cases probably just cites Weigley 1982 without reference to his source. That is something that I won't have time to go about improving, but I invite anyone else to do so. For now I have at least cited where this article got the "large Towne or Citty" quote. — ¾-10 04:18, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mayor Nutter[edit]

The page's final paragraph on Mayor Nutter's administration is quite promotional and poorly written. It's an important subject to cover, so I hope someone can improve it. MakeBelieveMonster (talk) 21:33, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Major Re-Write/Edit[edit]

I believe it's time for a pretty major copy edit session for the this. The GA rating is almost 4 years old, and I believe it has become somewhat stagnant recently. In fact, I'd propose knocking it back down to B status temporarily while we can do some improvements. There are a number of sections that are somewhat poorly written, unsourced, etc., and it could benefit from a concerted editing and improvement edit. I've done a few minor edits in sorting and formatting images, but it still needs quite a bit of work in the text. Who's ready to get on this with me? nf utvol (talk) 12:45, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

the name Philadelphia[edit]

Somewhere the article needs to mention that Philadelphia is the name of a city in the Book of Revelations (notably 3:7-13). Anyone living in William Penn's day would have known this. (The Philadelphia of the Bible corresponds to today's Amman, the capital of Jordan.)--98.114.178.61 (talk) 04:18, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

1854[edit]

I know nothing of Philadelphia. But I came across this, "Up until 1854, the city of Philadelphia was still governed as a collection of twenty-seven colonial-ear municipalities ..." Fateful Lightening, a New history of the Civil War, Allen C. Guelzo, kindle location 6240
Sounds interesting, but I do not feel qualified to add anything to this article. Paul, in Saudi (talk) 09:15, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What is missing from the recently created city timeline article? Please add relevant content. Contributions welcome. Thank you. -- M2545 (talk) 08:52, 18 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This citation links to a jeweler. I know this information is probably common knowledge and not really contested but this source needs to be fixed. Thanks! bcbroughton (talk) 21:02, 19 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Biased writing[edit]

The article is rife with political bias and should be reviewed. Science2civilize (talk) 16:31, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that this article is not politically neutral and is therefore not entirely factual or to be trusted as a reliable source of information. 72.238.45.144 (talk) 16:21, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Numerous uncited sections, 17th-century section tagged with "additional citations needed" banner since 2020, post-2018 information needs to be added, and 21st-century information needs to be expanded. Z1720 (talk) 02:40, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delist unless some editor decides to closely work on the article. The GA review dates back to 2007. The age of the review is not a problem in itself, but the review was pretty short possibly because the standards at the time were lower. A full review would be ideal (or needed?) given the nature of the first review regardless of the current problems. On top of that, there are the aforementioned issues but also orphan links like this and this, broken citation templates, likely non-RS, page needed tags, and so on.
