Nation of Aztlan???[edit]

I'm tempted to remove the paragraph about "professor/poet Alurista" and the mystical nation of Aztlan, as being non-notable, not supported by references, and not significant in the history of San DIego. Comments? --MelanieN (talk) 04:53, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Melanie N[reply]

San Diego was capital of Alta California??? Says who?[edit]

The article contains the following assertion:

"In 1821, Spain recognized Mexico's independence. The governor of Alta California and Baja California moved the capital to San Diego from Monterey."

I live in San Diego and I have never heard this claim. Everything I have read and every source I can find says the capital was Monterey, from 1777 to 1849. I have been unable to find any support for the San Diego assertion online - except for one reference to the governor's residence being here.

I tagged it as "citation needed" a month ago. No response. Should this assertion be removed as unverified? --MelanieN (talk) 15:37, 21 October 2009 (UTC)MelanieN[reply]

Tuna fishing capital[edit]

The UT did an article regarding the history of the Tuna industry that use to call San Diego it's capital. Here is the link to the story. I found nothing about it here or in the main San Diego article, perhaps it should be somewhere. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 06:12, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea, and certainly true. As recently as 30 years ago the main thing you saw on the Bay along Harbor Drive was tunaboats. All the "old money" in Point Loma consists of Portuguese fishing boat owners. (Note also the "Tunaman's memorial" sculpture[1] on Shelter Island.) I wonder where to add it? Probably not the Economics section of the main article, but possibly a mention in the History section, and certainly here somewhere. I'll give some thought to where and how to add it and will attempt something in the next day or two. --MelanieN (talk) 16:16, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Style and Tone[edit]

I suggest that this article be reconsidered for certain stylistic issues. Some of the sentences could probably be improved for readability and coherency. I'm also uncertain about the overall tone of the article. It strikes me as rather boosterist in some parts. I've tried to make a few improvements in the sections prior to 1900, but this still seems to afflict the section on urban renewal projects in particular. For instance, why the scare quotes around "gentrification" in the paragraph about Hillcrest? Katzentreffen (talk) 21:00, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
