Untitled[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for the input. I really appreciate it! This page is a work in progress for a history class, so anything helps.

I was wondering if you could avoid flagging this page though, so that it doesn't get bombarded...I will change my headings...rigth now it's a pretty rough outline as I research.

Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abay.sofia (talkcontribs) 22:54, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! I see another editor has already added something, though, so don't expect peace and quiet. Lol. One way to do this is to work in the "sandbox"...but since you've already started...putting "Under Construction, please do not modify" at the top would work. Some high quality history you're doing! Looking forward to it. Alpha Ralpha Boulevard 22:58, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Here are a few suggestions:

  • maybe the first couple of headings deserve to be combined in a subsection on premodern history?
  • discussion of 2 kinds of status in Treaty of Utrecht section is very interesting, but we need to know more. What (besides lack of political authority) were the features of second class citizenship? Were Spanish labourers 3rd class?
  • some population numbers would be helpful throughout
  • the Census quotation is great, but can you explain it a bit?
  • can Gibraltarians go freely to Spain, and could they in the past?
  • what about taxation, social rights, law?
  • in general it is really interesting, and I hope that you can make the divisions between legal categories clearer, and also fill in more details about the many fascinating facets.
  • format references with article name in "quotation marks," title of journal in italics.

Most of those topics are already covered in the pages on Gibraltar. --Gibnews (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 23:08, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gibraltar-related topics[edit]

I was about to add this article to the template but I am unsure whether it should be added to the History or Politics section. Any suggestions? Well done on the article by the way! --Gibmetal 77talk 20:07, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Improving the article[edit]

This article is really coming along well. I think that one of the biggest jobs yet to be done is to make the organization clearer and more logical. You have 17 main headings, and numerous subheadings. It feels a bit like you're giving us fact after fact, but it's not always clear where the article is heading, or why some things are included and others left out. Can you streamline the information?

  • I like your introduction.
  • Treaty of Utrecht section is okay, but you could make its relevance to nationality clearer. What is the meaning of the mix of nationalities in the census? What does this tell us about the population raw material the colony had to work with?
  • There are some errors of grammar and spelling.
  • The British garrison section is good, though I wonder if the first 2 paragraphs shouldn't be moved to the History of Gibraltar page (which doesn't contain this useful material). Do you think they fit here or there? The aim is to make the article focus more tightly on nationality.
  • Why did democracy come after the first world war?
  • In the last three sections (and elsewhere), nationality disappears somewhat and is replaced by political narrative. What can you tell us about the place of Gibraltarians (and non-Gibraltarians) in these episodes?
  • As I said earlier, what about taxation, social rights, etc?
  • How does naturalization, military service, etc etc work in the present day?

History of nationality in Gibraltar[edit]

How can an article about history of something begin in 1704? What happens, there were no Gibraltarian people before that time? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.129.35.250 (talk) 08:53, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The word is a more modern term see Gibraltarian people for an explanation. --Gibnews (talk) 15:04, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
