Opening paragraphs, heading[edit]

Paragraphs 2-4 in this article do not directly relate to papermaking in New York. They're of some use, though, sketching a picture of the historical context. A heading helps clarify this, so will put one back in. Much room for further development of this stub, including the opening paragraph. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 04:50, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Before wood...[edit]

Looking more closely at current contents of this article, it's clear that it now focuses almost exclusively on wood-based papermaking. There is some mention of early rag-based papermaking in the section on Watertown. But it would be useful to further develop the history of papermaking in New York before the wood-based papermaking era. This would include rags, but likely other paper stocks, as well, such as from maize (corn) plant waste, used during times of rag shortages. And then there is parchment and...???
