GA comment[edit]

This article shows a lot of promise, but it lacks any significant exploration of the wider impact of the railways on the British economy, such as you would find in most economic histories of the period. I don't think that the article will qualify as broad in its coverage until this aspect of the topic is dealt with. MLilburne 11:22, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An interesting point... could you give some sources for information on this? I agree that economic impact should be addressed before the article becomes FA "comprehensive". However, I don't see it as a major topic within the article... I would argue that such information primarily lies under the scope of Economic history of Britain.

I have to say that I do see it as a major topic within the article. From my point of view, a history of rail transport ought to address the causes and the impact of the rise of the railways, as well as the technical details of the lines and locomotives. The history of rail transport is intimately tied up with the history of the industrial revolution and with the history of business practice and organization in Britain.
The sources I would recommend are:
  • M.J. Daunton. Progress and Poverty: An Economic History of Britain, 1700-1850. (1995)
  • HJ Dyos and DH Aldcroft. British Transport. (1969)
  • TR Gourvish. Railways and the British Economy, 1830-1914. (1980)
  • GR Hawke, "Transport and Social Overhead Capital," in R. Floud and D. McCloskey (eds), The Economic History of Britain since 1700, Volume 1. (first edition, 1981).
That's a lot of books, but I thought I'd list everything that I thought was relevant, because I don't know how easy you'll find them to get hold of. I agree that the best course of action is always to add information yourself. I'm afraid, though, that I have enough projects ongoing at the moment that I'm just not going to have the time. I hope that the Hawke chapter is useful to you. MLilburne 10:38, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Route mileage[edit]

The article covers a very long period in the history of the railways, yet doesn't indicate how much railway there was at any given time. Didn't the network reach its maximum extent sometime during this period? What was it?
