Postal System in Holkar State[edit]

The first post offices were opened since 1829 at Indore and Mhow by Imperial Post. Indore Government on the other hand, had a contract with Brahmni Dak to carry the official and private mails. In 1873 Indore State Postal Department was established and in 1885 the first postage stamps were issued. Indore was the first Indian State to enter into a Postal Treaty with the Imperial Post in 1878 for exchange of mails etc. As per Stanley Gibbons Catelogue Indore state had issued 57 postage stamps. On March 1, 1908 the Indore State Postal Department was merged with Imperial Post. Indore's postage stamps continued to be used on Official mail but without the overprint.Ajay Kumar Mittal (talk) 14:33, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Revenue Stamps of Holkar[edit]

Before the introduction of the State Stamps Act in 1866, all fees known as rusum were levied in cash. At first a special seal was affixed to the papers used in documents. Later regular printed stamps & papers bearing a stamp for different values were used. Average annual expenditure on printing of Stamps & Papers was Rupees 15000/- and average sale was Rs. 2.5 lakhs between 1908-15. Upto December 1903, stamps were sold through a contractor in each paragana, and from 1904 through specially licensed salesmen. Treasury at Indore supplied all the district treasuries which in turn supply these license holders. License holders receive a commission of 2% on stamp papers in places where a treasury for the sale of stamp exists, and 3% at other places. On stamps a commission of 3% is granted to all license holders on purchase of more than 50 rupees. No commission was allowed on stamp papers of value above Rupees 50.Ajay Kumar Mittal (talk) 14:35, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
