I was there on the day the Hooker Oak fell. There was no windstorm, it was a calm day. We noticed the tree just start to quiver and shake and shiver, then there was a huge rumble and crash and it just collapsed. For years, the Parks Department had been bracing up the larger branches with steel pipes. The photos don't do this tree justice. Thirty couples could square dance on the stump and not bump into each other. My father, Guy H Hall, who was very involved with the tree told me the tree was split by lightning during a storm and half the tree came down.
