Disambiguation[edit]

Do we need a larger disambiguation page? I am not sure how to make that. But I could look it up.

As someone in the fields I see a distinction (with overlap) among:

Hospice
Palliative Care
Hospice and Palliative Medicine

Merge?[edit]

Can anybody identify why there is any value in having this as a separate article, rather than just redirecting to Palliative Care ?

From a global perspective, that article already covers both palliative care, including hospice care, with the note that in the U.S. a divide is drawn between the two, but this is not the case in most of the world where hospice care is treated as one particular aspect of palliative care.

So long as the Palliative Care continues to encompass both, there is surely no need for this as a separate umbrella article. Jheald (talk) 11:06, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with the idea of merger. This is an article about a physician subspecialty in the United States, e.g., nephrology, rheumatology, medical toxicology or pain management. Please see the sources for this article for support. There were times when writers in other articles had sought to internally link to a Wikipedia article for this subspecialty "Hospice and Palliative Medicine," and until this article was written they had had to cobble together a bifurcated set of links, "hospice and palliative care," which did not actually serve that purpose. This article could be expanded to include some of the relevant types of information included in some of the other subspecialty articles. However, expansion is a separate matter from merger.

On the other hand, palliative care encompasses all disciplines involved in improving the quality of life of patients with life-limiting/life-threatening disease or injury, e.g., nursing, social work, chaplaincy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, etc., as well as physicians, who act as inter-disciplinary team leaders, medical directors, and top-level clinicians.

As a palliative care physician, I agree with brimcmike. We could include the growth of the subspecialty in other parts of the world for example the UK. In the Certification of specialist portion of this article, it might be beneficial to include the steps prior to becoming certified for entirety of the process (i.e. Medical School, Residency, Fellowship). Also, the American Board of Internal Medicine and American Osteopathic Association could have could have links. However this is an informative section for this article. Cheers. The section "Education and training of hospice and palliative care physicians" seems very informative. I would suggest trying to incorporate more wikipedia articles where you can, ex. " here are 156 recognized fellowship programs in Hospice and Palliative Medicine". Perhaps there is a link to the fellowship programs that already exist? The section "Role of hospice and palliative care physicians" is concise and informative - may benefit from a bullet point style of presentation for the list of expertise of these physicians. Etymology & Intro Section[edit]

The etymology section looks great! I love the historical info about the development of the specialty. Just a few thoughts: - It may be useful to include hyperlinks to other wikipedia pages or external sites, especially for national organizations or well-known people. - In the sentence describing the Latin etymology of "palliate," I would advise moving the "to palliate is to..." phrase into a new sentence. - Some references, including [1] and [2] appear after a space after the end of the sentence, but they should be immediately adjacent to the end of the sentence. - Is it possible to link to a webpage for the "Approaching Death" report? Even if the report itself isn't available, it may be better to use a formal reference instead of putting the authors in parentheses - It might also help to split the section up into a couple paragraphs separating the etymology from the more recent history of the specialty
