looking for opinions on this[edit]

I feel like this article should be merged with hostel. Alchaenist (talk) 21:23, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. Another stub that would be better as a section under the main topic. Will place merge request. Andyo2000 (talk) 21:54, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"Hostal" is not the same as "Hostel" -- they are completely different categories of accommodation. When I stayed in hostals in Spain none of them had dormitory accommodation. If you're going to merge it with another article, "pension" would probably be more accurate. I don't think it should be merged though. "Hostal" is a distinct type of accommodation that only exists in a few countries. Let99 (talk) 17:23, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hostel/Hostal[edit]

This is ridiculous, I've lived in Mexico and we always would just say Hostal when in English you would say Hostel. If someone says Hostel in a Spanish speaking country theyre probably just trying to use the English word. There's a tendency in English to try to pick up all the different variants in different languages of the same word and claim that they refer do different things. Hostel, hotel, hostal, etc., are all really just the same word, although Hostel has become common enough that its entered back into French etc. Hostal though as a category is something you'd only ever find in a Spanish speaking country where it's thought of as the same word as the English Hostel and therefore shouldn't be treated as a different word in English. At the very most this might deserve mention on the general Hostel article, certainly not an article of it's own. And as regards the supposed differences between the two, most Hostales involve shared-room accommodations just as most Hostels also offer private rooms. Many hostels also have bars and restaurants, many "hostales" do not. In Germany most hostels are government-run, does that mean they're not hostels? In Germany they use the word "Herberge." Does that mean that "Herberge" should have it's own page and that we should claim it's something totally different? No obviously not that would be ridiculous, just as much as this page is. I sort of agree with you. I feel there are two issues here: (1) whether a "hostal" is the same or different than a "hostel"; (2) whether "hostal" is a valid English word, or it's just the Spanish translation of "hostel". I feel that most people agree that "hostal" in Spain is a different kind of accommodation, that is really unique to that country. However, I'm not so convinced that people should use this word in English, as it seems just like an unnecessary borrowing. It seems it can be simply described as a pension or guest house. I would vote to merge this under pension or guest house, and a mention in hostel. I also think that for most Spanish speaking people, "hostal" describes a "hostel" (dormitory accommodation); if it is used differently in Spain, that would be a special case for them.2001:4CA0:2216:0:CCD2:B6B4:9D27:140E (talk) 06:59, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Source of the article[edit]

It seems to me most of the article is copied from this website: Barcelona hotel, hostal and pension. Obviously, this is not a very good source. The article should be justified by its own sources, otherwise it has not reason to exist in the first place. --2001:4CA0:2216:0:CCD2:B6B4:9D27:140E (talk) 07:29, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hostal is just a variation of hostel[edit]

I see the one argument made here in favor of two separate articles that claims the two things are different. Problem is, I see no reliable sources supporting that argument. As most people seem to be in favor of a merge, I'm redirecting this to "Hostel". Fred Zepelin (talk) 01:18, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
