1717 drawing of a hoy, with measurements[edit]

I found a drawing of a hoy here (p. 22), with measurements, and judging by the style of the legend it clearly dates to the 18th century, but in that source it is rather unhelpfully credited to "Dennis A. Baker, Agricultural Prices, Production and Marketing ... (New York, 1985). That book is only available on Google Books in snippet view, where the drawing cannot be seen, so I've no idea if Baker credits it accurately. I also found the drawing here via TinEye.com, where it seems to be suggested (via Google Translate) that it was made in 1717, but again it is not credited. I think a good-quality copy of this image, obviously now in the public domain, might be useful in this article, if only its original source could be found! Nortonius (talk) 19:20, 2 June 2015 (UTC) p.s. I'm cross-posting this to the talk page for WP:SHIPS, here.[reply]

The Baker book is in a university near me. When I get back from my current business trip in a week or so I will look it up and see what I can see.Acad Ronin (talk) 06:52, 3 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Great – I had a look at that article on hoys in hunting information for something else entirely, it'd be nice if something came of that chance encounter. Cheers. Nortonius (talk) 10:32, 3 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The plate is from: Sutherland, William (1717) Britain's Glory or Ship-Building Unvail'd. The plate is opposite p.17 in Sutherland. Looks to me like the diagram is entirely within the public domain. However, I have only the Baker book, and the quality of the image is at best OK. I will see if I can get a scan of it. Regards, Acad Ronin (talk) 14:00, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent news – yes Sutherland (1717) is most certainly in the public domain. WorldCat lists numerous electronic copies, all beyond paywalls all of which are also beyond me.[1] Fingers crossed you get a scan. Nortonius (talk) 14:34, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Not a great image. If I can figure out how to enlarge the image while reducing the white space around it, I will. Acad Ronin (talk) 16:39, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant work Acad Ronin! If I may, I'll go ahead and fix the image, removing the white space and straightening it slightly? By the way, did you note the name of the artist, given in the bottom right-hand corner? The resolution's too low for me to make it out. Cheers. Nortonius (talk) 18:03, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Have your way with it, with my thanks. I applied a magnifying glass to the picture in Baker, but neither I, nor three other people, could make out anything. It was probably only marginally legible in the original, and a copy of a reproduction is no hope. Acad Ronin (talk) 18:14, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I'm not surprised about that, unfortunately it's not unusual – ok I'll sort that out now. :o) Nortonius (talk) 18:27, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Right I've done that now Acad Ronin, and taken the liberty of moving things around a bit – I hope you approve. Cheers. Nortonius (talk) 18:56, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Looks great. Many thanks. Now I'll have to read the Margate hoy article to see what I can incorporate from it. Also, I might try and decipher the dimensions to calculate the burthen. One of the things I love about Wikipedia is the possibility of incremental improvement. Regards, Acad Ronin (talk) 22:39, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
