Identity[edit]

An IP editor added a different set of birth and death figures a few days ago, using offline sources. Having looked into it a bit further, I think the dates are incorrect - but not the ones being proposed!

the initial DoB / PoB of Giffnock, 1900 was added by me based on the Man City book source - I have since checked this on ScotlandsPeople = uncommon name so fairly easy to track), and that Hugh Morris died in 1971, not 1965
the dates being proposed (1894, Giffnock / 1962, Whalley Lancashire) apparently come from the ENFA (I don't have full access) and a print book. They don't seem right to me. The only Hugh Morris born in 1894 was from Port Glasgow; he was also married in that area and his children were born there from 1926 onwards.

. The Hugh Morris who died in Lancashire was also born in that town in 1893 and married there in 1919 so it is extremely unlikely that either of these would be the Scottish football r.

the most likely candidate is Hugh Morris born in 1896 in Old Kilpatrick parish (this includes Hardgate, see youth team). I have found his marriage certificate (Glasgow, 1919) but this shows his occupation as a metal worker. His daughter was born in March 1922 just before the footballer went from Clyde to City so that is all still OK, but not looked at birth certificate as its not free to check and would probably have the same occupation. This guy next appears in available records again in the 1939 census, again as a metal worker but now living in Southend, nothing to confirm it's the ex-player but pretty big coincidence to be living where the player spent much of his time. On Ancestry, a photo has been added to that biography which looks like the footballer, but can't be sure from that, it's possible that they came across an image of 'Hugh Morris, footballer' and added it on the assumption it was their relative. You'd hope that wouldn't happen but only 1 image on the record so not enough to suggest it is from a personal family album and the contributors know the man; that bio mentions his playing career, but again nothing that isn't available online and couldn't have been added in error by an enthusiastic descendent in a 2+2=5 situation. Anyway that fellow appears to have died in Wolverhampton in 1979. I have a fairly strong suspicion that is the player's true identity but still looking for further confirmation.
