The only external link for this site was dead. We need to find another with decent content.

The German-language WP has a long article on Hofmannsthal. I'm translating & adapting some of that. As the article grows in length, it also seemed worthwhile to separate the biographical information from the discussion of his thought & philosophy. Herbivore (talk) 22:06, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Poetry and Heroism[edit]

I realise that the views on English culture attributed to Hofmannsthal are probably from a quoted source, but where can he have read Nelson's poetry? Or, for that matter, an account of Milton's military exploits? Perhaps the notion was simply that English popular culture admires (allegedly) both military and literary celebrities equally and without any notion of hereditary aristocracy - lucky for Nelson he pursued his military career in a meritocratic service.93.96.231.233 (talk) 11:58, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I was confused about Nelson's poetry and Milton's war heroics too. I think the sense is "The English admired not only war heroes, but also poets: not only Nelson, but also Milton." No citation, unless it's linked to the following quotation. Jackaroodave (talk) 02:08, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
