Duplication of effort[edit]

@StaceyEOB and Cosmicphantom: So we can all learn a lesson, read up. Shadow symbol created this article about "Human Resources" during Unforgetting 5. For whatever reason, Hloman created this article about the same thing during a Wiki Women event on 7 October, just a month later. This second article was proposed for deletion once and has been proposed again just now. What I'll do is let the other article get deleted and bring whatever useful content to here. This nonsense could have been avoided.

In the future, let's remind new editors that they should search and be sure the topic isn't already covered before they wade in. As is the fashion with many of these events, first-time editors seem to leave wiki after spending a couple hours with us. We should also reinforce that the "I'll just throw something together now and develop it more later" attitude isn't a winner because they're never coming back. Furthermore, this leads to wasting the effort of Wikipedians in cleaning up sub-standard articles. I've already started gathering more sources because the deletionists on-wiki will remove anything that doesn't look notable. I'm all for having artists help counter our collective systemic bias but it does no good to duplicate effort. Chris Troutman (talk) 04:32, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, sorry, the dates actually don't match up with any of my events so I don't believe this was created at Unforgetting 5. I can't speak to the training offered at the Wik-Ed Women meetups but isn't Shadow symbol the organizer of that series (or do I have usernames confused)? Generally, I follow up on the articles created at Unforgetting meetups and if anything is poorly sourced or doesn't meet stub criteria, I will usually fix it myself so we aren't leaving Wikipedia in worse shape than we found it.StaceyEOB (talk) 04:45, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You misunderstand. Human Resources (Non-Profit) was created 6 September at your event in Pasadena. I was there. I recall seeing Gail Boggs there and I recall troubles with the wi-fi. The other article was created at one of Cosmicphantom's events which I was also at. There was pizza. So no, my criticism isn't directed at you. I'm just laying out the story. We're all one big community so I'd like for all of us to be on the same sheet of music. I'm commenting here because the other talk page is going to be deleted and I don't want to comment on a user talk page when more than one editor is involved. The other talk page will not be deleted unless this one is deleted. When you merge, you never delete the source page, and if someone does, smack them with a {{trout}} and make them restore it. Oiyarbepsy (talk) 21:24, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No problem either way, I'm seeing a creation date here of 7 Sept. All I'm meaning to communicate is that I didn't assist anyone in creating this page so I can't account for it. I hear your concern about sub-standard articles but work very hard to make sure that's not what we're creating at the Unforgetting meetups, and I'll continue to stay on top of it.
