Series Hybrid[edit]

Hydraulic systems are now being developed as full series hybrid drivetrains. Google or Yahoo hydraulic hybrid for many hits. In the late 70's, students at Hennepin Vocational Technical in Minnesota built a modified VW Beetle with a fiberglass Kelmark GT body and a series hybrid drivetrain. It was capable of cruising at 65 miles per hour (and higher speed bursts) and achieved 75 MPG in a road test competition. It could've done even better but a valve replaced the day before was mounted so its handle turned down to close and vibration almost fully closed it during the event. So where's the auto industry been for the past 30 years?
