IBSF World Snooker Championship[edit]

I note it says in ProjectSnooker that an article on the IBSF World Snooker Championship (which was called the World Amateur Championship until about the mid-90s) is being sought.

I have had the results from this tournament for a while and am looking to publish them somewhere on the internet for reference as they don't seem to be anywhere else, even on the IBSF's own site. I thought about asking them or possibly sites including WWWSnooker or Global Snooker Centre but I've not asked anyone yet - too busy).

So, at the risk of looking in need of getting out more and/or getting flamed, here they (hopefully) are!

Eek, what a mess, don't have time to clean it up now into a more readable/attractive format. This was two Miscrosoft Word files and it came out looking even worse than this when I included all the Group Stage tables! So I've taken the Group stages out (except for the earliest years) and just left the knockout stage results. If anyone wants the group tables as well please e-mail me and I can send them the Word files as an attachment. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.16.21.166 (talk) 18:54, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with this is that all results have to be referenced so they can't be added to the main article. However this is interesting information and shouldn't be lost, so I propose transfering these results to the IBSF discussion page so at least they will be stored. If references are found at a later date then the results can be simply tranferred into the main article. It may be worth contacting Global Snooker because it follows the amateur scene quite closely and seeing if they want the info for their archives. If they add it then that will give us a reference. I think first we should make an overall article to the IBSF World Snooker Championship. (This can be used as reference]. Armbrust (talk) 19:37, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed; making templates for this stuff is jumping the gun. We need a well-developed article first. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 22:42, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

World Amateur/IBSF Snooker Championship - sources[edit]

Up until 1991 a Rothmans Snooker Yearbook was produced, edited by Janice Hale who also edited the Global snooker website. The editions up to and including 1990 (most of which I have) include the World Amateur Championships from up to and including the previous year, although the 1991 edition didn't include it. Otherwise back issues of Snooker Scene (and the defunct Pot Black) usually - though not quite always - listed the results of this competition with their articles/reports on it.

History incorrect and incomplete[edit]

Warren Simpson of Australia won the World Amateur title in 1954: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/134098062 Billsmith60 (talk) 16:07, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Do we know it's the same event? The IBSF doesn't list it, and I've not seen much about it. They mention billiard events around this time, so seems unlikely. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 16:54, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There are quite a few references in the Australian press to it being a world championship. However, The Billiard Player (the official magazine of the Billiards Association and Control Council, which was the world as well as UK governing body for amateur snooker at the time) reported the tournament as "the Australian Open Snooker Tournament" rather than as a world championship. Given that Frank Edwards (the runner-up) was in Australia for the World Amateur Billiards championship, perhaps the reporters assumed the snooker was a world championship too. A Brisbane Telegraph article mentions that "England is placing great importance on it as a lead up to the inauguration of world amateur snooker championships". (According to Edwards's own account, his match against Simpson had 2,5000 spectators, "with many hundreds turned away".) Regards, BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 19:36, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello fellows, there's also a YouTube video of Warren playing Fred Davis in 1960 in which the former is listed as 'world amateur champion': another error, perhaps?

Billiards was still bigger at that time hence more reports on it, I'd say. Regards Billsmith60 (talk) 14:12, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fascinating video! I see the description says "Contrary to the title card ... Warren Simpson wasn't, and never has been, the World Amateur Champion". I guess the footage is from from the exhibition match menioned at the 1960 World Open Snooker Championship article. Regards, BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 16:17, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
