Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. ‑‑ElHef (Meep?) 17:02, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

BFI listing of Soft Targets, which was a Play of the Day, from 1982, in which he played Alexie Ptrlws (talk) 21:24, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Doh! Apologies, Play for Today, not “Play of the Day”! :) Ptrlws (talk) 21:25, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Right, I’ve added Play for Today to television filmography. As ‘Soft Targets’ is the name of the play itself, rather than the overall show, I have not included this. Please do let me know if you feel there are any improvements to how I’ve added this. Thanks! Ptrlws (talk) 12:32, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

BBC Obituary[edit]

I've added a citation to the BBC obituary. It may be applicable to many parts of the article. The reference is named <ref name="BBC Holm Obit"/> and the URL is https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-13960349. Feel free to use it. I'll look back in when I have a moment. Sir Ian Holm also features in the 1979 classic All Quiet on the Western Front where he played a character called Himmelstoss 92.4.75.154 (talk) 06:38, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. JTP (talkcontribs) 06:43, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Born in London[edit]

Goodmayes isn't Essex. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.12.240.147 (talk) 22:39, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It was at the time of his birth. - SchroCat (talk) 05:18, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hospital[edit]

But some source said Ian Holm was born at Mental Hospital in Goodmayes, Essex, but some source is said he was born in goodmayes, essex, which one is trust to support the his birth in ? I see the source for example https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8439945/Lord-Rings-star-Sir-Ian-Holm-dies-aged-88-battle-Parkinsons-disease.html , https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-13960349, https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/419430/british-actor-sir-ian-holm-dies-aged-88, because his father was work there and birth there? I searched by the internet the mental hospital is called goodmayes hospital, so that he was born there, but i not sure there can be support his birth place in this hospital ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.40.137.200 (talk) 11:18, 23 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

1. Stop edit warring on this.
2. This articles does not say he was born in a mental hospital. We say he was born in Goodmayes. That is all that is needed. We don't need to add the trivial detail of which hospital (where would it end, for crying out loud: bed number and ward name?) So all we say - and this is the common approach across the whole of WP - is the town in which he was born.

3. If you disagree with this, you should not revert yet again, but discuss. - SchroCat (talk) 11:36, 23 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Lord Of The Rings radio play.[edit]

Ian Holm played Frodo Baggins in the 1981 BBC Radio 4 adaptation of The Lord Of The Rings. Not sure whether it should be added, or even where it could be added. Link : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings_%281981_radio_series%29 Starfiend (talk) 01:31, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The performance is mentioned in the 5th paragraph of this section Ian_Holm#Career. I'm not sure there is a place to move it to or not. MarnetteD|Talk 02:10, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Filmography[edit]

I do not see the movie Jesus of Nazareth listed among his many appearances 173.3.143.154 (talk) 04:46, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It is a made for TV item and is listed here Ian Holm#Television. MarnetteD|Talk 17:23, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rate Attribute Review Comment
1. Well-written:
1a. the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct.
1b. it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation.
2. Verifiable with no original research:
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline.
2b. reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose).
2c. it contains no original research.
2d. it contains no copyright violations or plagiarism. No issues from the review of offline sources during spot checks.
3. Broad in its coverage:
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic.
3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style).
4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each.
5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute.
6. Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio:
6a. media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content. Infobox image and grave image are both CC. I wasn't initially expecting the use of the image from the FOTR movie to be adequately justified, but the rationale is comprehensive and IMO is adequate.
6b. media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions. No issues. (Spot check on "This has been said to have overshadowed the rest of his acting career" was OK.)
7. Overall assessment.

Comments[edit]

  • filmreference is regarded as "generally unreliable"
    • Replaced.
  • Findmypast is regarded as "generally unreliable" (and the archived link is not helpful anyway)
    • Replaced.
  • IMDB is regarded as "generally unreliable"
    • Replaced.
  • The Geek's Guide to SF Cinema is missing the publisher
    • Added.
  • The quote attached to note 11 ("he took the part of Frodo Baggins...") isn't relevant in most of the instances. The source is used twice (refs 11 and 22) so I think it just needs a little tidying
    • Gone.
  • Spot check on "one of the pioneers of electric shock therapy" No issues - fairly close to The Independent source text but IMO fine per WP:LIMITED
    • Noted.
  • Not a required change for a GA, but consider varying some the sentence openings in the first couple of paragraphs of Career. (e.g. the second para has "In 1967","In 1977,", "The following year","In 1981")
    • Done.
  • Not sure if it's an MOS issue but "a villainous Moroccan" doesn't seem quite appropriate.
    • Edited.
  • Again, not a required change for a GA: the first half of the Career section goes by at quite a pace. I'd prefer to know a bit more about the roles and reception for Lenny in The Homecoming and the roles in the third paragraph.
    • Extended.
  • "Based on the novels by Len Deighton, this tells the story of an intelligence officer (Holm) who learns that his own wife is an enemy spy" is uncited. (There are a couple of other statements without inline citations in that paragraph; info is cited in the tables but I'd prefer inline cites too)
    • Cited.
  • Spot check on "He was Harold Pinter's favourite actor: the playwright once said: "He puts on my shoe, and it fits!" - quote is verified but I think "He was Harold Pinter's favourite actor" is too strong based on the source, unless I've missed something.
    • Edited.
  • Spot check on "His ashes are interred on the western side of Highgate Cemetery" - source doesn't specify that it is his ashes.
    • Edited.
  • Spot check on "1991, Naked Lunch, Tom Frost" - no issues. (Source has "The Naked Lunch" but seems the be in the wrong)
    • Noted.
  • Spot check on "2001, From Hell, Sir William Gull" - no issues.
    • Noted.
  • Lead: "He gained acclaim for his role in The Bofors Gun (1968) winning the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role" not in body, and not referenced.
    • Added to body, with ref.
  • Lead: "He voiced Chef Skinner in the Pixar animated film Ratatouille (2007)." reference in the table, but should probably be added to the body text if it's worth of being in the lead.
    • Moved out of lead, added ref.
  • Another thing not required for a GA: add a ref column to the Theatre table, for consistency with the Film and Television ones.
    • Added.

Thanks for the responses, Chiswick Chap, they resolve all the comment above. I found only one match of any concern from Earwig's Copyvio detector: "two daughters from his first marriage, a son from his second marriage, and a son and daughter from his 15-year relationship with photographer Bee Gilbert" appears in that form in the source; I think it's a little past what WP:LIMITED permits. • Edited.

I'm satisfied that the article meets the GA criteria, so I'm passing it. Thanks, Chiswick Chap. Regards, BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 14:05, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
