Enlistment date vis-à-vis WWII service in two theatres[edit]

I just realized that if he had time to serve in two theatres during WWII, then one would think that he must have been in the military prior to April 1945. Something needs clarification. I suspect that (a) he was in the military prior to April 1945, but did not join the Royal Artillery until then; or (b) the April 1945 date is incorrect; or (c) his service in Asia was not during WWII, but after it. Reply 1 (2006)[edit]

That sounds likely, but it is also possible that Hogg served in a civillian capacity (i.e. ambulance driver/ merchant navy/ H.M. Coast Guard), etc or simply was intially sent to Europe and after V.E. day, was moved either to the cleanup action agaisnt Japan or to the British component of the occupation of some part of the Japanese Empire. Reply 2 (2008)[edit]

England is in Europe. Enlisting automatically means he "served in Europe." The war in Asia didn't end until September. So it is quite possible to enlist in April, do a couple of months of training in England, go to Asia, serve there, and have served in, as the article says "Europe and in eastern Asia." Note the article says nothing about serving in two "theatres". Words mean things. The article says "served in Europe and in eastern Asia." You're the one who added "theatre". Here's a dump from LOC.gov, globally converted to wikitable syntax. Because I'm procrastinating getting back to real work. Caveat 1: This needs cleanup; the "Coauthor(s)" column doesn't do justice to the illustrators and coeditors that are often listed within the title field. Caveat 2: U.S. LOC gives 96 records under "Hogg, Ian V., 1926-", but there could be dozens of other books by Hogg out there in the oceans that are not snagged by this net.
