How recent is recent?[edit]

Recent scholarship has suggested that the theme for the Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn, by Johannes Brahms, opus 56a, was probably composed not by Haydn but by Ignaz Pleyel.

This is mentioned in Grove V, vol. IV, p. 177, (Haydn: Works, Divertimenti). My copy was reprinted in 1966, but it was actually written in 1954. I suppose that's still relatively recent compared to Pleyel's time, but just reading the sentence quoted above, I got the impression it was something that had come to light in the last 10 years or so. -- JackofOz (talk) 22:57, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have any sources available for a week or so, but I am positive that I have seen much later scholarship ascribing the work to Salieri rather than Pleyel. I'll get back to it. Sirion123 (talk) 14:59, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pleyel pianos[edit]

How could I add only the section (Pleyel pianos) to the category of Piano manufacturing companies, without adding the entire article into it?
Or should we have a separate article for the piano company?

I agree that this is a start-class article, even if a good one. With a few changes, I think it could easily be brought up to B-class. First, the lead section needs to be expanded, and secondly there should be more that can be said about this composer, who the article says was one of the most famous composer of his time. At the moment though, there are too many scattered one-sentence paragraphs and it reads like a collection of notes, rather than an article. Number of siblings[edit]

Various sources claim wrongly that he was the 24th of over 30 siblings which is incorrect. Spelling, Ignaz vs Ignace[edit]

Both spellings are absolutely correct and well-attested; there is no valid way to exclude either one, because both are present in large numbers of good sources. In such a case, how are article-writing decisions made? TooManyFingers (talk) 17:02, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

With very famous people, WP:COMMONNAME. With others, consensus I think. Looks like I'm the one who wrote the first draft of this article, back in 2004. "Ignaz" was the name I had learned because most of the music I have by Pleyel was published in Germany or Austria. If there's consensus to move the article to Ignace that's certainly fine with me.
