Fussy[edit]

They have a riduculously complicated registration procedure - just so you can use their advanced search.

Although they seek volunteer photographers, they seem to prefer professionals. I offered my services and was told that: the images must be on celluloid (how awfully 20th century!) and must have been taken for the project (ie. not out of the photographer's stock). This may explain why it has taken them 6 years to get to 300,000 photographs.

geograph on the other hand, only accepts digital but it accepts anybody's pictures and is not too fussed about quality. Which may explain why it has reached 140,000 pictures in a year. -- RHaworth 07:36, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was one of the volunteers on this project so I wanted to answer the comments above. The project started just before the digital revolution. The majority of digital cameras were not of sufficient quality, so they had to standardise on film for the project.
Each volunteer had to undergo training. There were specific requirements for the photograph. Due to budget constraints, we were only allowed one photograph per building. If the sun was in the wrong place, we had to come back another time.
Bear in mind that the large majority of the listed buildings are peoples private homes. We had to seek permission to photograph, and supply evidence of this. This is one of the reasons they could not accept anyones pictures.
Often permission was refused, which is why a lot of the pages are blank. -- MortimerCat 09:57, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I was a volunteer for Images of England right at the start of the project, and I remember a lot of controversy erupting over the private houses issue. As I remember, we were told that it was fine to take photos of private houses without permission, as long as we were on public land when we did so. If we needed to enter private property to take the photograph, then we needed written permission. Looking at the project website, however, it appears that IoE has subsequently introduced an 'exemption scheme', whereby homeowners can register to keep photographs of their property out of the database for a limited amount of time. I will look at adding reference to this in the main article. Sjb90 15:18, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

links[edit]

Another fussiness is in linking to IoE. This link:

will not work (unless you happen to be registered with IoE and have a "logged in" cookie live in your browser). Fortunately it is sufficient to simply drop the pid=2& This link:

should work for everybody.

But please use neither! I have now created a template. Use it thus:

{{IoEentry|201198|the accident-prone Coal Tax Post in Ditches Lane}}

will produce:

the accident-prone Coal Tax Post in Ditches Lane

Useful template, thanks: now in use on Leeds Parish Church and Temple Newsam. PamD 09:08, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also to note that {{IoE|NUMBER}} also works, which basically generates some automatic text for referencing. DWaterson 22:33, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
