Merge discussion[edit]

It is proposed that the following three articles be merged into one:

The rationale behind the merger is that none of these articles is very big and thy all share the same history. I propose that the combined artcile be the International Congress of Radiology (ICR) as that has a higher profile than either of the other two articles.

I have written a draft lede paragraph:

At the first International Congress of Radiology (ICR), held in London in 1925, proposals were made for the establishment of three commissions - one to advise on units of measure, another to advise on radiological protection and the third to promote education in the field of radiolgy. The first two commissions are now separate bodies in their own right - the International Commission of Radiation Units & Measures (ICRU) and the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), while the third, the International Commission on Radiological Education (ICRE) remains a subcommittee of the ICR. Since its inception, the ICR has grown sufficiently large to warrant the setting up of a separate body, the International Society of Radiology whose main purpose is the organisation of the congress.

Reasons why not to merge[edit]

The only reason given to merge is that the wikipedia articles are too small. I would suggest this is insufficient reason, as there is every likleyhood that these pages will be expanded in time.

In support of separate pages, it should be noted that the objectives of the bodies are quite distinct.

The International Society of Radiology (ISR) is a confederation of around 80 national radiological societies. Its mission is defined broadly as education in radiology, the advancement of the practice, radiation science and protection. - This from their website, so RP is only a part of their work.

The ICRP is primarily engaged with radiation protection, and the use of radiation units are only one of the tools they use.

The ICRU is the international advisory body on units only.

The functions are therefore quite distinct and I suggest Wikipedia should reflect this by keeping three distinct pages.Dougsim (talk)

I support the merge, because these organizations have heavily overlapping origins, mandates, and memberships, and I do not foresee any of the individual articles being expanded greatly in the near future. The boundaries between these bodies has often been blurred in practice, since it's often been the same people in all the meetings. Small size of articles is a perfectly legitimate reason to merge, as stated in WP:MERGE. The ICRP and ICRU articles have been around since 2006, and they are still only 1 paragraph long six years later. That's a pretty good indication that they probably won't grow quickly anytime soon. If we merge, and then someone goes on a writing spree, we can always split them back up later on. But let's be realistic here. I'm not sure I've ever seen a set of articles that fit the WP:MERGE criteria better than these ones.--Yannick (talk) 19:49, 28 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have taken the liberty of working on a combined article - User:Martinvl/sandbox. The section on the International Congress of Radiology is nearing itrs final state, but the other sections are still "construction sites". If you would like to have a look at the development, feel free to do so. I think that this will give a feel as to how the various articles have been knitted together. Continuing the merge[edit]

I have started the merge, but on looking at the article, I am having seconf thoughts about merging as the sections concern are reasonable sized artciles in their own right. We should possibly keep the ISR in the same artcile as the ICR, but split the ICRP and ICRU and ICRE back into their own articles. Comments? Martinvl (talk) 15:31, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
