Lack of mention of cable Internet services[edit]

Tidy up[edit]

I agree - the importance of fast internet speeds has only risen, and is being addressed in a number of ways that need explaining on this page. In particular: Fibre roll-out (both BT & other providers); Rural outreach for high-speed internet and community efforts; (A)DSL, cable, mobile and wireless broadand and other methods (inc. a mention about dialup). There's a lot of points in Internet access that are UK-specific and there could be benefits to adopting a similar format. Dialup/History[edit]

List merging[edit]

Oppose. I generally oppose the suggested merge. Similar separate list articles seem to exist for other countries either as "List of * broadband providers", "List of broadband providers in *", or "List of Internet service providers in *". Also, I find that lists such as this are often out-of-date, poorly referenced, and often a magnet for SPAM. I'd like to keep all of that away from the main article on Internet in the United Kingdom. We might want to consider changing the name of the list article to "List of broadband providers in the United Kingdom" or "List of Internet service providers in the United Kingdom" since those names seem more common for other countries. --Jeff Ogden (W163) (talk) 21:04, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regional cable and telecomms companies[edit]

'Broadband Internet access in the UK was, initially, provided by a large number of regional cable television and telephone companies which gradually merged into larger groups.'

This isn't true - the regional cable companies did not offer broadband until they had consolidated to ntl and Telewest, neither of whom could be described as 'regional'.

There have never been a large number of telephone companies in the UK offering broadband access, the only telcos in the UK with their own local loops are BT and, in the Hull area, Kingston Communications. In the earlier days service providers were mostly ISPs who also happen to offer call packages and none used unbundled loops, they were reselling BT Wholesale products. The first unbundling to any extent was done by Easynet and the first real consumer unbundled broadband services were from Bulldog, later acquired by Cable and Wireless.

Developments since 2006 needs some work[edit]

I've helped to update this section with newer information from 2015 - 2016 and 2019 - 2020 since the section has been lacking an update since 2012. There has been many developments that have happened in those periods that I've missed out, can I have some people to help plug the information gaps that I've missed (i.e. the altnets and FTTx developments)?

Article revamp[edit]

As per the tags added, I'm going to look at having a go at revamping the article in order to give it better fluidity. The timeline from initial copper services to fibre services is a bit of a difficult read, with some of the content repeating in various sections with no additional context or reason for doing so.
