Date of death: January 12 or 22?[edit]

The article says Pitman died on January 12, and the information was apparently taken from Encyclopedia Britannica. Earlier the article said he died on January 22, and some earlier editions of EB said so, too. Does anybody know what is the original source for January 12? (Where did EB get it, or is it an error?)

January 22 seems to be common in books about shorthand history, e.g. Benn Pitman's Sir Isaac Pitman: His Life and Labors, E. H. Butler's The Story of British Shorthand. and Alfred Baker's The life of Sir Isaac Pitman. Baker writes (p. 326): His death occurred at ten minutes to eight o'clock on the morning of Friday, 22nd January, 1897. Should we undo the change and revert to January 22? --Ryhanen (talk) 11:15, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have been Googling this very subject because there has been some recent changes on this subject. I have come to the conclusion the 22nd is correct. I found that quote on p 326 of Baker's The life of Sir Isaac Pitman and think that Britannica has got it wrong on this occasion. Yaris678 (talk) 19:10, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
22nd Confirmed by ODNB. Ref added. There are a number of obituaries in the press as well dated 23rd. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:24, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
