Spelling[edit]

There are two eras with very similar names:

The diacritics are missing on both. For some reason, one is listed as Jōō while the other is Jō'ō. There is no such difference. Both should be romanized as Jōō. Let me provide more details.

Joo (first)
Kanji: 貞応

Kana: じょうおう

Pronunciation (katakana): ジョーオー

Pronunciation (IPA): ʥoːoː

Romanization: Jōō

Joo (second)
Kanji: 承応

Kana: じょうおう

Pronunciation (katakana): ジョーオー

Pronunciation (IPA): ʥoːoː

Romanization: Jōō

The both even have the same accent in Japanese. They should both be spelled Jōō. However, they will need to be distinguished. Rather than "first" and "second", I propose the following:

Joo (first) -> Jōō (Kamakura)
Joo (second) -> Jōō (Edo)

The first Jōō occurred during the Kamakura period, while the second during the Edo period.

In addition, either Joo or Jōō should be used for disambiguation. I can take care of all of the details if a consensus can be reached. Comments? (Cross posted to Joo (second).) Bendono 03:25, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
