Reliable Sources

@Red Challenger: This article needs reliable sources, such as articles in reputable newsmedia. You can try searching news.google.com. The policy on living people, WP:BLP, requires that all statements about living people must be reliably sourced. (Youtube doesn't count - see WP:IRS.) I placed a BLPPROD on the article, which means it may be deleted in one week if no reliable sources are added. After you add them, just remove that. --Sammy1339 (talk) 19:38, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

User:Davey2010 you deleted it while I was answering it, so it was a case of edit conflict.
Although I always delete blatant vandalism, as with this edit earlier, I was previously criticized for not explaining why ESPs were refused, and what the editor should do next time.
As for your statement "Obviously the editor is a kid who doesn't really understand copyvios etc." you cannot prove that, however, that is precisely why my explanation is more detailed than the standard reply template. Moreover, we always have an obligation to assume good faith - Arjayay (talk) 16:12, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

Recent Removal of content

Hello all,

I have noticed that someone, user:FoCuSandLeArN, has removed almost half of the content on Jacks wiki page, citing the reason as 'removed unreferenced'.

After having a quick look at the differences, he has halved the amount of references on the page, (which were Youtube videos) and removed a lot of information which I personally believed added to the article.

What I am asking, would a citation needed tag, be better. Leaving the information there for all to see, while leaving an indication a little bit of work is needed.

Asking about this rather than doing it myself, as this is a big change, and I am fairly young to this type of thing on Wiki.

Lbmarshall (talk) 14:07, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

Youtube is not a reliable source, least of all a video from the article's subject (neither is twitter or any social medium - see WP:IRS for in-depth information about reliable sourcing). This being the biography of a living person means we require a certain standard of referencing for information about said person to appear on Wikipedia. If information isn't verifiable, we simply cannot include it on Wikipedia. The information I removed had other issues as well, including tone, language and general content issues (e.g. "abrupt yet gentle nature", etc). In the future, make sure you provide independent and reliable sourcing for content you add (for instance: books, magazines, newspapers, etc; everything that has an editorial process behind it, i.e. content can be traced back to an author and publication). Also, if you're in any way associated with the subject make sure you go over WP:COI; I strongly suggest you do not edit the article yourself if this is the case, instead requesting edits be performed. Best, FoCuS contribs; talk to me! 16:43, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
Well, so go there and delete everything from the page of other youtubers like markiplier as well, since the only reference you can get from a youtuber is from their own youtube channels. I know its wikipedia policy but it is just dumb, now this page have no info at all about the person. -- 179.212.90.130 (talk) 01:20, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
Not trying to start any argument with user:FoCuSandLeArN, but you do have a point. I was bored at work, and after checking Markiplier's page, about half of all references on there, are either Youtube videos or social media. It does seem a little, lack of a better word, stupid. That a Youtuber, cannot have references to their own Youtube videos, where they reveal information about themselves. Surely they is no better reference than the person stating it, on video. I have read up on the articles you linked, WP:IRS & WP:VERIFY, and to me it would appear that WP:SELFPUB or WP:SELFSOURCE, would allow a "questionable/not a reliable source" be used as it is self published, about themsleves. I hope I am understanding everything right. I can also assure you I have no WP:COI. I only watch Jack on Youtube, and have only edited the Jacksepticeye page, to fix vandalism or formatting, never to add any new information. Lbmarshall (talk) 16:02, 14 December 2016 (UTC)
  • I'm sorry but both your arguments go against policy. We need independent reliable sourcing for referencing articles, especially biographies. I'm sorry if that disappoints you, but we're an encyclopaedia and as such need to base our articles on fact. Anyone can post anything on youtube or any other social medium. If you think the only references available for a youtuber's biography are their own videos then I'm afraid Wikipedia is not a suitable place for your edits. In fact, most youtubers are non-notable given they have no coverage beyond their own channel (i.e. newspapers, magazines, etc); note their youtube channel audience is not an adequate gauge for Wikipedia notability. Some of them do have said coverage, and thus have articles on Wikipedia which are backed by good quality sources such as some print media. Others are not on Wikipedia, and rightly so. Others are on Wikipedia even though they should not be, and they will be dealt with accordingly. Also note that the subject of this particular article in my opinion falls into the first category, hence I merely cleaned it up; there is coverage about him on reliable sources - what we cannot have is an article entirely backed by bogus links. FoCuS contribs; talk to me! 16:29, 14 December 2016 (UTC)
How is a biography valid as a reliable source but a different type of technology to spread information in a video format that makes them no different than a readable biography isn't? -- 179.212.91.105 (talk) 01:38, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Personal Life

Jacksepticeye has 2 brothers and 2 sisters. All of them are older than him.[1] One of the brother named Malcolm McLoughlin which he looks up to. He referred him on his Youtube video[2], while Malcolm McLoughlin himself also wrote a blog post on his personal website that mentioned Jacksepticeye as his little brother.[3]

Jacksepticeye has graduated from Hotel Management study[4] in October 2014.[5]

He is dating Signe Hansen Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).

Copyright Issue

On Jan 7, 2015, Jacksepticeye's Youtube account got strike on copyright infringement because one of his video has Talking Angela app conversation with Evie bot. If he doesn't acknowledge it, his account can get deleted.[6] But as time passed, it is revealed that the core issue of why the Talking Angela app's owner reporting Jacksepticeye of copyright infringement is because the owner didn't like Jacksepticeye used the kid-friendly app to talk foul words. Jacksepticeye found out that he can get copyright strikes removed if he removed the video,[7] and as per Jan 9, 2015, the copyright strike has been retracted.[8]

On his Wikipedia page, it states "He has not dyed his hair back, unlike Markplier" with a reference to the video where he first dyed his hair green. However, just recently, he did indeed go back to his natural hair colour, so this information no longer needs to be there. Links to his Twitter and Instagram posts where he shows this: https://twitter.com/Jack_Septic_Eye/status/937029750203338754 and https://www.instagram.com/p/BcNdy7_H5c6/?hl=en&taken-by=jacksepticeye

We have a source that suggests he is from Athlone, however, I don't think it is reasonable to trust this source over his own word of where he's from - this is completely allowed under WP:ABOUTSELF. I find it ridiculous that the updating of the article to read birth place as Offaly keeps being repeatedly reverted, but I respect that wikipedia has it's rules, so fair enough. However, the man himself clearly states in this video that he is from Offaly, and no-one who is as intelligent as Mr. McLoughlin are going to get such a fact about themself wrong any time soon. I do realize one person already submitted such a request but I have added extra details to remove ambiguity as to why. RenatusUpborne (talk) 19:48, 5 October 2020 (UTC)

updating sub count

Hi! I'm seeing in the embedded notes that the standard is to update the number of subscribers every 100K, ie. 25.5 million which is the current count. This makes sense to me as it's what YouTube shows, but I would note that Seán gains 100K subs in a pretty short amount of time! He hit 25M flat on October 9, and a month later (well, November 10) he has another 500K, which averages to more than 100K a week. Does it make sense to commit to updating this once a week if this rate continues? I'm a regular viewer of the channel who is happy to update the article as soon as I notice and remember, but it seems likely that it will end up out of date at some point. Does it matter? And if so, would it make sense to do "more than [last million] subscribers" or is that bad practice? I think that's what it was before I changed it to be in line with what the note said.

Relationships

Possibly, all the way back from 2010 to 2012, Jack began dating a Korean girl he got interested in and found online. They were both in different locations, so it was hard for them to closely communicate. Afterwards, after several months to a couple of years, he finally got enough money to meet his girlfriend in Korea. They eventually broke up, though the details of the event have never been disclosed.

From early-2015 to August 2018, he had a girlfriend named Signe Hansen (pronounced "sig-neh") from Denmark, whose YouTube channel is Wiishu. She is a digital artist and has often posted fanart of Jack on her Tumblr. At a PAX panel Q&A, Jack stated that he met Signe because she was a fan of his. They started talking on Tumblr and became friends, and eventually started a romantic relationship.

Signe joined Jack and some of his friends - Bob, Wade, and Molly - in his Revelmode charity stream on Twitch when they were playing Overwatch, has been mentioned in a vlog and can be seen in the background with Jack in PewDiePie's PAX 2016 vlog and has a few videos up on her own channel. On February 11th, 2017, for Valentines Day, Signe released a couples' special on her channel. After the video, Jack appeared in several more of her videos. In November 2015, Signe moved in with Jack, and the two lived together in Brighton, UK. On October 9, 2018, Jack announced that he and Signe separated and went their own path. He posted to his Twitter that it was "not an easy decision to make".

On March 15, 2019, it was announced via photos on their respective social media accounts that Seán is in a relationship with Dutch YouTuber Evelien "Gab" Smolders (Formerly known as GirlGamerGab).

Seán William

In Sean’s most recent video, he said he wants the Wikipedia page to remove William from his name Hatryrhodk (talk) 20:07, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

So? Wikipedia doesn't necessarily care about what the subject of an article wants. We add and change information based off of available reliable secondary sources. If the sources change to not include "William" (or no sources have William as part of his name) then it can be removed. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#0001 14:28, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Help desk#Policy on birth names is relevant to this discussion. Just informing everyone here. There I note that several sources use his full name but I'm still not sure if it can be removed on privacy grounds or for any other policy reason yet. Alduin2000 (talk) 14:37, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
I was going to ask at WT:BLP or WP:BLPN but I actually think that policy already covers this case. WP:BLPPRIVACY states Wikipedia includes full names and dates of birth that have been widely published by reliable sources, or by sources linked to the subject such that it may reasonably be inferred that the subject does not object to the details being made public. This gives two scenarios in which full names can be included:
  1. They have been widely published by reliable sources
  2. They have been released by sources linked to the subject such that it may reasonably be inferred that the subject does not object to the details being made public
Firstly, McLoughlin's full name has been covered by multiple reliable sources including The Irish Times [1][2][3], Irish Examiner [4][5], and Irish Independent [6]. Secondly, McLoughlin does not object to his middle name being published on privacy grounds (which makes WP:BLPPRIVACY irrelevant in terms of excluding the name) but on the grounds that he doesn't identify with the name. This is not a good enough reason to exclude the information when weighed against Wikipedia's duty to inform its readers about the reliably sourced information on a topic or person. As such, I'm going to re-add the middle name. Please discuss here if there are any policy-based disagreements about this. Thanks. Alduin2000 (talk) 16:23, 23 September 2021 (UTC)

Change all instances of Seán William McLoughlin to Seán McLoughlin

Seán recently stated in a video that he doesn’t use his middle name William for anything and doesn’t understand why it is associated with him and would like everyone to drop the William from his name.

Hi! I wanted to suggest removing the "William" in Seán's full name. In a recent YouTube video he mentioned he does not use William as his middle name and blatantly said he wished to be credited as just "Seán McLoughlin". Video was posted on the JackSepticeEye YouTube on 9/20/21 for reference.

Birthplace

The article currently states that McLoughlin was born in Cloghan, County Offaly. There is some support for this in the reliable sources; for example, in this article there are sources by the Westmeath Independent [7], Irish Examiner [8], and IrishCentral [9] which state this. However, the source currently supporting the statement in the Early life section says "Florrie wanted to set the record straight that Seán only resided in Athlone for a while but it isn’t his hometown. That can be claimed by Ballycumber."[10] Some other reliable sources state that he is from Ballycumber, County Offaly, including The Times [11], The Irish Times [12], Irish Independent [13], and TenEighty [14]. For now I'm going to change the sentence to just say that he was born in County Offaly just to be safe as all sources agree on that at least. Does anyone know if McLoughlin himself has said where he was born as it seems that he would be the authoritative source on this? Previously there was this video also supporting the statement but he only says that he grew up in Cloghan in it - he could have moved there shortly after birth so I don't think this is good enough to support the claim. Thanks. Alduin2000 (talk) 16:33, 25 September 2021 (UTC)

I added his birthplace as Cloghan as he said in his Wired Autocomplete interview, but I can’t figure out how to cite it. Girlyswot (talk) 18:09, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Girlyswot, thanks for adding the information! I will add the reference shortly. I believe that in the editor there should be a cite button that you can paste the url into and which will automatically generate a citation. If that doesn't work, you should be able to click the cite button and then go to the manual tab and create a citation from there; that should be easier than writing the citation in the source editor. Hope that helps in future. Alduin2000 (talk) 18:22, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

I myself am from cloghan, Sean was born in cloghan. He went to primary school here in the local school if I’m not mistaken. Went to secondary school in Banagher College colaiste na sionna ( if I’m not mistaken ) then moved to ballycumber where he had his log cabin where he started his YouTube career. Moved to athlone to do his college course and then his YouTube took off, not sure where or when he is now but that’s my knowledge 89.19.88.118 (talk) 19:51, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

Title case issue

One of my edits, in which I inserted the DISPLAYTITLE template, was reverted per WP:SENTENCECASE. I displayed the title as "jacksepticeye" instead of "Jacksepticeye". It's like this with articles such as jacksfilms, fuslie, xQc (WP:NCLOWERCASEFIRST), and even jschlatt. Even goop has an entirely lowercase title. Who knows how many other articles are like this? L33tm4n (talk) 22:43, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

WP:OTHERCONTENT arguments are generally not very convincing. As far as I understand it, titles should only begin with a lowercase in rare circumstances, things like the meaning of the title changing upon case change (e.g. the mathematical constant e) or in cases where the word would remain lowercase even at the start of a sentence (e.g. eBay).
