Removal of content[edit]

I have removed the following content from the article

His primary area of work was bridges and marine engineering. His works include the South Dock and Half Tide Basin of Swansea Marina,[1] Tennant Canal, Aire and Calder Navigation, New Junction Canal and many bridges in Scotland.[2]
He was instructed by the Lords of the Admiralty to arbitrate in the complicated case over the developments at Watchet Harbour in October and November 1856.

as the refs do not support the claims, and I cannot find a ref for the final statement. If you know of good sources, please re-instate the content with those refs. Bob1960evens (talk) 14:27, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have since discovered that there was another James Abernethy active at the time, dated 1809-1879, who was an iron founder and bridge maker. He was the cousin of this James Abernethy, and was based in Aberdeen. See Cross-Rudkin & Chrimes (2008) p.2-3. The Dictionary of Scottish Architects Biography appears to have them mixed together. That is confusing, nice work figuring it out! I seem to be the person who introduced some of the above info the article. The ref for the Tennant Canal etc. appear to be to the other James Abernethy (it gives different birth/death dates). Not sure what is wrong with the Swansea ref it states: "These new dockside spaces were named after James Abernethy, the prominent Victorian engineer who designed the South Dock and Half Tide Basin in the early 1850's". Unless you believe this to be the other Abernethy as well? The Watchet part was introduced by someone else. Cheers - Dumelow (talk) 08:09, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies. You are quite right about Swansea. He worked for the Harbour Trustees over many years. It was the fact that the Tennent Canal was listed as a major work, when all he did was write a report that basically said it was past its sell-by date. That seemed rather insignificant compared to a 120-mile railway with a 4-mile tunnel, or the Cardiff Bute Dock, for instance. The Swansea bit was sandwiched between a bit about the wrong Abernethy, and the Jim Shead ref, which did not seem to support a description of major works. I should have been more careful.
