I believe you are looking at this from the American perspective. I'm a yank too, but on Wikipedia, they have adopted the global definition of referring to the sport we call track and field as "Athletics." Athletics is the term the Olympics use for the sport. The world governing body recently changed their name to World Athletics. And the participants in the sport are referred to as "athletes." For Mr. King, when there is another potentially notable participant in track and field with the same name, then we should specialize. Support per nom. We usually use the specific event in athletes' names, whether we use the term track and field or athletics (as I would, being British) for the group of events in general. Absolutely no reason not to unless they were notable in more than one event. Just as we usually use "chemist" or "physicist" instead of "scientist".
