There are no dates with this piece - for instance when was this person born and when did he die?? 28 June 2005

I'm not sure what you are talking about - the article says:
"James Mackay (1804 – 29 May 1875) was..."
"James Mackay was born in 1804 in Aberdeen, Scotland, the second son..."
"He died in May 1875 at the age of 71."
"Born 1804

Died 29 May 1875 (aged 71)

The other James Mackay[edit]

There's another James Mackay, 27 years junior to this one: James Mackay (New Zealand politician, born 1831). And going by the younger one's DNZB entry, it was him who spent time with Julius von Haast in the Southern Alps. I therefore wonder Marcus Pedersen's 2017 book (Great Expeditions: the Journeys of John Rochfort, James Mackay and Julius Haast to the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand, 1859–60) should be used as a reference for this bio. I've never seen that book. Whoever has it, could you please check which Mackay it refers to? Schwede66 08:32, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have a copy of "Great Expeditions" and it is the best book on the subject available. It gives a lot of biographical information on the older James Mackay and his family. Also, although the book focuses on James Mackay junior, James Mackay senior did spend time with Julius Haast in the Buller area. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marcus Pedersen (talkcontribs) 20:06, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The 2017 e-book of "Great Expeditions" is no longer available on Amazon because it has been replaced by a second edition (I have been meaning to update the references on Wikipedia). However, it is available at the National Library of NZ: https://natlib.govt.nz/records/38214814?search%5Bpath%5D=items&search%5Btext%5D=marcus+pedersen+great+expeditions
Thanks, Marcus. I somehow managed to overlook that we are talking about father and son. All's good. Schwede66 03:03, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
