James Mortimer was a complex character with a very interesting life of which chess was only a minor part. Despite this, chess-playing forms the major focus of the article. To redress this, it would be worthwhile to expand on his relationship with Napoleon III and with Eugenie. It would also be good to add details of his personal life, such as his marriage to Lydia Cowell and details of his professional life such as his playwriting and his publishing activities.
