A fact from James R. Tanner appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on November 12 2008 (check views). The text of the entry was as follows:
Did you know... that U.S. PresidentBenjamin Harrison appointed James R. Tanner Commissioner of the Pension Bureau in 1889, but had to remove him six months later because he vastly exceeded his office's budget?
Text and/or other creative content from James Tanner (stenographer) was copied or moved into James R. Tanner with [permanent diff this edit]. The former page's history now serves to provide attribution for that content in the latter page, and it must not be deleted as long as the latter page exists.
You're right, but this article has the more natural title and is older. Merge in the relevant information that's not here, then make the newer page into a redirect. --Coemgenus (talk) 12:58, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Surely it would be easier to take this page and put it into the other page which is more detailed and change the name
I think that's the opposite of the normal procedure. I don't do these much, but I think we should consolidate the info here, ask an administrator to do a history merge, then delete (or redirect) the other page. Okay, what I do not like about this article, is what made Tanner *especially* notable is that he was the stenographer at Abraham Lincoln's deathbed. In that respect the other page is better. Please keep this in note while you do the merge. - BernardZ (talk) 15:30, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
