French culture?[edit]

Is that weird to anyone else? The article that was linked to for the information on his winning a knighthood in France does not elaborate any further, either. What sort of contributions to French culture did he make? How? I guess, was it in their understanding of American Indian culture? It only says that he "maintained a faithful following throughout Europe." Hm? Chicopac (talk) 03:13, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

 • According to this obituary he was given it for Fools Crow, not for any contribution to French culture. He taught in France for a while and certainly did his bit to build bridges, but in the absence of any better source I've latered the article to remove that claim. In Section "Accolades", please change "Chevalier of the Odre des Artes et des Lettres" to "Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres" because the spelling is wrong. You can also to refer to https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordre_des_Arts_et_des_Lettres for more details

First line[edit]

The first line currently reads:

James Welch (November 18, 1940 – August 4, 2003), who grew up within the Blackfeet and A'aninin cultures of his parents, was an award-winning Native American novelist and poet...

I propose that we change it to:

James Welch (November 18, 1940 – August 4, 2003) was an award-winning Native American novelist and poet...

and add the information about his parents' cultures into the appropriate section(s) of the article in order to fit with the way all other bio articles read. I will make this change in a few days unless there's an actual reason to keep it this way that I may be missing. Thanks! -Hamsterlopithecus (talk) 14:47, 18 November 2016 (UTC) The 7th listing under Accolades ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Welch_(writer)#Accolades ) has a typo. It should read the "Chevalier of the Ordre..." (NOT Odre). If you are editing anyway, you could also add in the link: Ordre des Arts et des Lettres . It would also be good to add a description and image (in the Accolades section?) of the Google Doodle about him on Friday, November 18, 2016. 75.118.187.232 (talk) 16:01, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

SECTION: Career Paragraph 3, sentence 1

The sentence refers to the "Native American literacy renaissance. I suspect that "literacy" should be "literary."

EXISTING: Welch's work was collected in anthologies of Native American literature. He is one of the early authors of what became called the Native American literacy renaissance.

REPLACE WITH: Welch's work was collected in anthologies of Native American literature. He is one of the early authors of what became called the Native American literary renaissance.

Specific enrollment?[edit]

Was James Welch enrolled with his father's Blackfeet Nation or his mother's Fort Belknap Indian Community? The article does not specify. Bohemian Baltimore (talk) 09:45, 10 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
