Jan Crawford Greenburg "Supreme Conflict" discussion with Choper, Varat, Kmiec, Starr[edit]

February 1, 2007 Ms. Greenburg was on campus at Pepperdine University School of Law as part of her book tour promoting Supreme Conflict. She participated in a discussion with Supreme Court scholars:

'Controversies' section removal[edit]

I have removed the "controversies" section introduced on 9 January, on the basis that it was substantially flawed and inappropriate for Wikipedia.

  • The section was poorly sourced, relying on a single source to justify the existence of a "controversy". A search for reporting on the existence of such a "controversy" turns up no other results other than a handful of blogs and websites, most of which are dedicated to Ron Paul himself.
  • It speaks of "many commentators" without identifying such commentators, which is a weasel word preventing verification of the reliability and suitability of these purported "commentators".
  • It adopts a non-impartial perspective and tone, opening with a slanted expression of doubt ("failed to accurately report"), describing the omission as "puzzling" and "unscrupulous" (which in turn necessarily suggests - without citation - that the action in question was intentional), and speaking of "misfeasance" (a term that specifically refers to the unlawful or improper execution of a lawful action and is potentially defamatory when used inappropriately).
  • This has the overall effect of turning the section into an editorial, in which motives are improperly assumed and conclusions drawn that are not supported by the provided evidence or in compliance with Wikipedia policy.

These issues, moreover, are highlighted by the fact that the section title chosen by one of the most substantial contributors to that section was "Lack of creditably [sic] as a journalist", which is clearly not in line with Wikipedia policy or guidelines. The fact that ths section title was subsequently change does not bring the therein-contained content into compliance with said policies. The above issues would be problematic regardless of the content of the article, but editors should also note that they "must take particular care when adding information about living persons", in accordance with Wikipedia policy on biographies of living persons. Disagree. Biographies about news reporters/commentators routinely include "controversy" or similar-titled sections. See Glenn Beck, Rachel Maddow, Rush Limbaugh, and so on. Also the articles on FOX News, MSNBC, et cetera. Your claim that it is inappropriate ignores the fact is is standard practice on wikipedia.
The section needs to be REWRITTEN, not censored. So "be bold" and rewrite it to remove any objections you may have. ---- Theaveng (talk) 16:41, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
