Colorblind?[edit]

Any references to the rumor that Scheltema was colorblind? Doug butler (talk) 00:55, 28 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No, No evidence for colorblindness. The rumor may have been malicious, more about that later in 2018. The NLA has little more that can improve the entry for now. I have milked Trove and have a file with the findings. They are one of the agencies with the wrong year of JHS' death still shown on their website(s. I am translating JHS' letters of the 1880's and 1890's sent OS and some received, to English. Bit of a job. It is about 300 pages. Done just 21 pages. When that is done I will have some more information and illustrations to add. user: Peter Reynders. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peter Reynders (talkcontribs) 09:27, 29 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Gwenda Robb et al, "Concise Dictionary Of Australian Artists" Publ. Melbourne, MUP 1993, states clearly in the lemma of J.H.Scheltema that there is no evidence he was colorblind. After inspecting some hundreds of pieces of of his works, I fail to understand how anybody with sound eyes could conclude that he was. Quality art writers, it appears to me, are not expected to record unsubstantiated a rumors in published material, without a source. It's entry however still keeps the allegation copied from another such Australian source, and reprinted a few times, that most of his work was in monochrome. That too is not sourced and not the case. The number of pages to be translated (ref above comment) (manuscripts now in SLV) has grown to over 800. It will be a while.
