Merge[edit]

The article at Ariadne (weather) duplicates part of this article (indeed, the full article text was copied into this article by the editor who started that article), and the two should be merged to avoid duplication. Ghmyrtle (talk) 19:19, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes we should merge them, Ariadne is the Hellenic (Greek) name given to the weather phenomenon by the Hellenic Observatory of Athens (also known as the National Observatory of Athens). Note that the name Ariadne covers only the weather phenomenon as experienced in Hellas (Greece), as it is not a Europe-wide name designation. Hellas vs Greece[edit]

@Sofia Koutsouveli: could you explain why using the more common name "Greece" instead of "Hellas" is "unacceptable" as you noted in the edit summary here? [1] HaEr48 (talk) 19:49, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • I explained in the next section in the talk page, the name Greece is increasingly being seen as insulting because it was the name used by the Romans when they conquered Hellas, and the official name of our country is Hellenic Republic and the European Union uses Hellas to refer to the country. Please do not use Greece to refer to Hellas[edit]

Note that the official name of our country is Hellenic Republic, the European Union has formaly recognised our country with the short name Hellas and the long name Hellenic Republic and the name Greece for Hellas is in recent years being increasingly considered unacceptable and insulting by the Hellenic (Greek) people and there have been calls for a formal demand on United Nations to ask member states to cease using the name Greece/Greek or other names derived from the same word root as it was a name given to Hellenes by the Romans when the Romans conquered Hellas militarily and is thus seen as an insulting name by the Hellenic citizens. Hellas is well-acceptable in English and everyone understands the country it refers to, it is acceptable to use "Hellas (Greece)" but using only Greece can be very insulting to most Hellenes now. The Wikipedia article on the country notes the Hellas name in the lead section as being an alternative English name of the country (that comes from the local Ellas/Ελλάς name) and notes that it is the name by which the country is known since antiquity, thus it is a perfectly acceptable name to use in English (considering that Hellas is an English word deriving from the Hellenic word Ελλάς which transliterates as Ellas in the Latin alphabet). You need to discuss this further at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Greece [sic]. If you have evidence that the word Greece is considered "unacceptable and insulting", you need to persuade other editors of that case. Thanks for the information, Sofia Koutsouveli. In the meantime, I think we should follow WP:COMMONNAME policy to use the most recognizable name (in this case, Greece), even if they differ from the native name or the official name. Also. please avoid repeatedly reverting other editors' update. That indicates your position does not have consensus and might cause you to be blocked under rules such as WP:3RR. I leave Wikipedia in protest because I feel discriminated against my ethnicity. My country is named Hellas and the name Greece offends my ethnicity. The Romans used the name Greece when they conquered my country and they used the word Greek to mean slave. When I wrote the article I used "Hellas (Greece)", then they reverted me and I tried to solve the dispute by using "Hellenic Republic (Greece)" and even "Greece (Hellas)" but they kept reverting me. My country is glorious and I'm a devout Hellene nationalist, calling my country "Greece" is unacceptable because it is a name used by the evil Romans. I edited the Name of Greece article giving sources about the Hellas-Greece issue and references to calls by politicians to change the international name of our country but other users deleted my additions, further offending my ethnicity. I will not edit on Wikipedia anymore as you have offended my national emotions. When the time comes Hellas will establish a worldwide empire and Wikipedia will come under the control of Hellenes, when this happens I will return to this site. For now, goodbye!
