Attempt to justify atrocities[edit]

The claim that "his mind had become unbalanced by the atrocities committed by the Vendean and royalist armies" is not only unsourced, but outrageous. The man was clearly a monster, whose sexual and cruel exploits were almost unparalleled even in the Red Terror. To suggest that responsibility lay with alleged and unspecified Vendean atrocities is rather strange and extreme. It is rather like saying that the Holocaust was due to Jewish crimes of money lending etc. The claim ought to be deleted.122.60.18.186 (talk) 07:27, 30 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
