Biography

Born into a family from Saint-Malo , Jean Malo-Renault 2 is the son of Emile Auguste Renault (1870-1938), said Malo-Renault , pastellist , engraver and illustrator , and his wife, Honorine Tian ( 1871-1953) known as Nori Malo-Renault , herself an aquafortist engraver and craftsman.

He graduated from the Sorbonne in Paris in 1924 with a degree in history. He then wrote a thesis on religious architecture in Brittany in the Middle Ages at the École du Louvre . He enrolled again at the Sorbonne in 1934 for a complementary thesis: Research on the letter decorated in the Middle Ages (from the manuscripts of Montpellier) .

He is known as the author of a vast retrospective bibliography of Brittany by analysis of printed and periodical sources from 1480 to 1960 , of which 150 000 records are kept at the Rennes Métropole library 3 and have been available in microfiche since 1988. this bibliography is called the "Malo-Renault file".

Jean Malo-Renault has collected an abundant iconographic documentation for a thesis on religious architecture in Brittany. More broadly, he became interested in Breton costume and folk art, constituting many files.

In 1928 , he was appointed librarian at the medical science section of the University of Toulouse , then in 1932, librarian at the University of Montpellier .
