A career that started by selling ethnic and retro clothing, castoff Dior and Indian embroideries in 1960s London was always going to be colourful. Born in 1947 to a Chinese father and Anglo-Italian mother, Jennifer Margaret Kee is not only a national fashion icon but an enduring figure thanks to her bright, eclectic style and fusion of fashion and art.

   Kee enrolled at the East Sydney Technical College in 1963 and studied fashion design, however her love of exotic colours and designs was a stark contrast with the neutral flavour of Australian fashion at the time. Her epiphany came when she saw Thai-silk bikinis being made in Surfer’s Paradise.

   After meeting The Beatles and bedding John Lennon, she hot-footed it to London in 1965 where she worked with Vernon Lambert (an antique-clothes dealer and columnist for L'Uomo Vogue) in his Chelsea Antique Market selling vintage couture.

   1972 saw Kee return to Australia and open her boutique, Flamingo Park. The success of the boutique drew fashion and textile designer Linda Jackson to Kee and together they created the iconic Kee colourful wool jumpers.

   After surviving the Granville train crash in 1972, Kee began painting as a way to cope. The images – of birds, flowers, opals and tropical fish – were screen printed onto silks. In 1977 these silks were given a full spread in Italian Vogue and were used by Chanel in Paris.

   Kee’s signature is her red lips, inspired by the native Australian flower, the waratah.

   Of her rock'n'roll conquests, Kee lists Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Roger Daltrey. "If you're going to be a groupie, well, I went to the top," she says.

   Kee was married to artist Michael Ramsden for 21 years and enjoyed a long-term relationship with sculptor Danton Hughes (son of art critic Robert Hughes). She has one daughter, Grace, and a granddaughter, Stella.
