Michelle fired over Gene?[edit]

This article claims John Phillips fired Michelle Phillips for having an affair with Gene Phillips. The Mamas & the Papas gives a different story, in which Michelle Phillips had an affair with Denny Doherty, and then got together with Gene Phillips after the affair was outed.

One of the articles appears to be incorrect, but I don't have an authoritative source. Does anyone else?

It was Gene Clark of The Byrds that Mama Michelle Gilliam had an affair with and not Gene Phillips. Gilliam's affair with Papa Denny Doherty occured in late 1965 and was very brief. Gilliam and John Phillips had been separated for months in the spring and summer of 1966 and she was living with Gene Clark on Lookout Mountain at that time. Papa John Phillips was dating Ann Marshall during this same period. -KarenLackey 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Just a comment. If there were any illegitimate children, from these affairs. The group really was the Mamas (mothers) & the Papas (fathers). GoodDay 20:10, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jill Gibson on 2nd Mamas & Papas album[edit]

There are a lot of claaims here and very few facts.

Studio musicians who played on all the sessions from what became the second album by the Mamas and Papas and Lou Adler himself say that Jill Gibson's vocals are not on the album. The implication one can take away from reading the article here is that Jill is on the single of "I Saw Her Again Last Night" and that is not true. That was not recorded. That is Denny's original flub recorded with Denny, Michelle, John and Cass at the end that Lou decided to keep.

This article treats Jill Gibson as though she is Saint Jill while the Michelle Phillips entry treats Michelle as a tramp. Jill Gibson isn't that pure and Michelle is not the root of all evil. Wikipedia needs to address the rampant sexism in all the Mamas and the Papas entries and in this fantasy tale of Jill Gibson, they need to start sourcing their claims as opposed to presenting false claims as facts and avoiding being challenged because they didn't footnote.

You clearly have your facts messed up. Where did you get your information about Lou Adler? And why did you not state your name in your post? Are you avoiding something? Your false claims are without credibility.
Both Lou Adler and Bones Howe have made it more than clear over the years that Jill Gibson sings several songs on the second album by the Mamas & Papas. Read Mathew Greenwald's book or wait for Greg Russo's upcoming book on the group and you will understand more on this matter. You may just learn a little something about the truth concerning the recording of the band's second album. Also, several of the musicians who were there, including Hal Blaine, have verified the very same thing. This is no fairy tale. Jill Gibson appears on four of the twelve tracks.
I do not see your point on how this article treats Jill Gibson as a saint. I see no such thing here. As for your comment on Michelle Phillips being treated as a tramp..that is just ridiculous. No where in this article is Michelle Phillips treated as such. ~~Karen Lackey

Disambiguation needed?[edit]

Perhaps there should be a mention that this isn't the Jill Gibson that was married to Chad Stuart and recorded with him while Chad and Jeremy were on hiatus? Should that Jill Gibson have her own page?71.190.89.115 (talk) 02:01, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have been a fan of the mamas and Papas for many eyars and this article on Jill Gibson and the one on the Mamas and Papas are way off base. Wrong! Bad Info!! The author must be a buddy of Jill, because he or she only takes into account Gibson's own recollections and quotes, ignoring others who were much more likely to be in the know, like Producer Lou Adler, Recording Engineer Bones Howe and Papas Denny Doherty and John Phillips. These inaccurate articles need to be corrected!

Gibson claims to have sung ten songs on the M&P album...maybe she did in the studio or in concert...but saying she is on ten of the songs on the record is not true. According to rock historian Greg Russo, studio records show Michelle had already recorded at least six of the songs on the album in April 1966, including the two singles, "I Saw Her Again" and "Words of Love." Some of these were re-recorded with Jill in July, but Lou indicates Michelle's versions were on the record.

Quotes from the book “Go Where you Wanna Go”

Lou Adler: “We recorded Jill on six songs, which we later replaced. Some of them. She (Jill) actually performed with them, a couple of shows.”

The group did not work well with Jill. Denny and Cass did not want her in the group.

Denny Doherty (Go Where You Wanna Go): “She (Jill) was completely out of her element.”

“As soon as we tried it without her (Michelle) we all said ‘Nah…it’s not going to work without her…’”

John Phillips (from book "Papa John"): "I saw that though Jill was a perfectly adequate singer, we needed Michelle's stage charisma and grittier edge."

Bones Howe (Go Where You Wanna Go) : "When Jill Gibson came in, it didn't sound the same."

And as far as fans missing Michelle being a "myth," read this account from a fan at a concert in Dallas Texas, 1966 (from "Go Where You Wanna Go")

Sandy Grainger: "First John, then Denny, then Michelle – we thought – and finally Cass. From the stage Jill could not look more like Michelle if they were twins. John got busy with the introductions. He introduced Denny to wild applause…then he introduced their new member 'Mama Jill.' There was an audible gasp from the crowd and a few shouts of 'Where’s Michelle?' It was obvious she was missed. We felt cheated.”

Jill Gibson: “I remember one time in Forest Hills, New York, where a guy in the audience yelled out ‘Where’s Michelle?’ I think that upset John.”

The author of this article disregards all facts and documentation except Jill Gibson's. Let's get some facts here! How about a fair and balanced account?? Gibson was only part of the group for eight weeks or so.
