This may be nothing, but your Find-A-Grave person was buried in Dallas, and the 1992 commencement address at Philander Smith College was delivered by "Dr. John A. Bell, School Desegregation & Educational Civil Rights Consultant, Dallas, Texas, Alumnus, Class of 1951". Unfortunately I can't link the document directly, but this was from the Philander Smith College Distinguished Alumni Portal, File #764: "CommenceProg_1992_00137.pdf". Okay, it gets better. Same archive, File #815: "philanderian_1992_Spr_redacted.pdf": "The keynote speaker for Commencement was Dr. John A . Bell, Executive Director of Bell & Associates, School Desegregation and Educational Civil Rights Consultants of Dallas, Texas. Dr. Bell, a 1951 alumnus of the College, also holds a Master's degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and a Ph.D. from Indiana University. He has 20 years' experience in the investigation, negotiation and enforcement of Federal Civil Rights Laws and Regulations in Elementary, Secondary and Post-Secondary educational systems. In addition, he has worked in higher education as a professor, top administrator, head football coach and athletic director at Bishop College, Knoxville College, Mississippi Valley State, and Texas College". I have seen nothing to suggest that this John A. Bell served in the military at all, much less that it would be the key item on his gravestone. BD2412 T 04:24, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

Do we know what Bell did after graduating from Philander Smith in 1951? He could have easily been serving in the military then, during the Korean War. His successor as head coach at Mississippi Vocational, Doug Porter, served in US Army from 1951 to 1954, right after graduating from college. The gravestone looks that the standard issue that the United States Department of Veterans Affairs will provide for veterans, free of charge. Jweiss11 (talk) 05:19, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

We don't know one way or the other. Here's what I found. Arkansas Magazine Spring 2015, page 47 has a list of "missing" alumni of the class of 1955, including John Anthony Bell, which is almost certainly our subject. A 1955 MA, typically being a two-year degree, gives time for service in Korea after a 1951 BA graduation. BD2412 T 14:04, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

I found his dissertation (added to the article) where he apparently indicates his year of birth as 1929 (unless that was added by someone else). In the introduction, he thanks his wife Joyce and son Jonathon. BD2412 T 19:45, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

This tracks with the 1961 Knoxville Journal report, "Faculty Members Employed", which includes the hiring of "John A. Bell, dean of men and Mrs. Joyce M. Bell, head resident of Colston Hall", and says of the latter, "Mrs. Bell holds a BA degree from Philander and a MA degree from the University of Colorado with majors in speech therapy and psychology".
