What means "advise:?[edit]

In the article under Career it says "He advised two Ph.D. students". Well, I knew John fairly well, as I was a UofA Math graduate student in 1969-72, and CS grad student in 1972-74. John took me out to an Italian dinner (excellent veal parm) where we discussed, duhhhh, integer factorization. When I joined the CS department for my Ph.D. it was common to have a sort of "minor" topic and of course I chose Math. John was one of the two Math professors on my Ph.D. committee. So in some sense he "advised" me, though of course he wasn't my principal advisor. Does that count, making it three, not two, students? JohnH~enwiki (talk) 22:39, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@JohnH~enwiki: Here, advised two Ph.D. students means "was the doctoral advisor for two Ph.D. students". A list can be found on the Mathematics Genealogy Project (John Brillhart's entry). In this case, that sentence is referenced to the Notices of the American Mathematical Society letter which specifically mentions that he had two Ph.D. students. — MarkH21talk 07:48, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
