Sourcing information[edit]

I have removed the references to "My Years at Xerox" by Chester Carlson, as I can find no references to this book through online searches.

I have inserted the only book by Chester Carlson that my researches have found - but if someone could verify mention of John Crout in this, I'd be grateful.

I have removed references to John Crout's obituary - again, my online searches couldn't find any obituary. Again, if someone can provide a citation (name of newspaper, date of publication, page, etc) then that could be added. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 12:19, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

His full name was John Shaw Crout, as I added to the article. SSDI gives a John S Crout, (July 5 1899 - October 31, 1987), dying in Columbus, where Battelle is, so almost certainly him. Any corroboration, and I will add these dates. Might help for searching, so mentioning it here.John Z (talk) 09:05, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have added the 1 reference I could find without having to buy a book! I also checked my local libraries in Croydon, but could not find any suitable books which mention him. However, that one reference I did find convinced me that he had a significant role in the development of Xerox. So, I admit I was wrong to put this up for deletion! I am glad that this has been deprodded - but people need to find more sources of information, which are probably available (perhaps at libraries in America). -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 09:57, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Here we go -- about the book: "My Years at Xerox", was authored by John H. Dessauer, not by Chester Carlson (my bad, I think). References to the book follow. (I may be able to obtain a copy). sReview of "My Years at Xerox: The Billions Nobody Wanted". Here is another reference to the book, this from Alan C. Kay (Apple Computer). Another reference, ycombinator.com (aka "Hacker News") is here. This URL us a PDF image made from a 1972 newspaper article that refers to it. This page appears to be part of an investing website devoted to the author. It mentions the book in its first paragraph. Another PDF, a newsletter, is here.
Another book, "The Computers Nobody Wanted: My Years at Xerox" by Paul A. Strassmann, took the Dessauer title format, re-arranged it and applied that format to its text. (Either in jest, or because the author wanted to capitalize on Dessauer's success.) About half of Google's 2,900 results referred to the Strassman title, slightly less than half to the Dessauer title. The search string was "My Years at Xerox. (I suspect the time lag explains their presence. It may be that other articles once related to this one, should be resurrected.)

Reference to Battelle historical document[edit]

Improvements mentioned in WP templates can be made using the newly-uploaded image from the Columbus Dispatch.

Battelle was engaged in work on the Manhattan project, and currently manages at least one research facility underneath the Department of Energy. It may be difficult to obtain some information but there should be more, given the positions Crout held with Battelle, and the period of time he was with them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kernel.package (talkcontribs) 07:12, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
