"Having played the punk and new wave circuit through the early 1970s..." That would have to be quite the feat, since there was no punk nor new wave circuit through the early 1970s ;) While punk obviously had its earlier roots and inspirations, punk rock as such didn't emerge until 1976. While the term new wave may have initially been used somewhat synonymously, it later came to signify punk offshoots that were somewhat more palatable to the general public ear, if you will.
