Father[edit]

What is in the ref is misleading: he was a merchant and banker of Dundee New Bank: [1]. Awaits better referencing. The brother Sydney Smith Bell would be notable as an author. Charles Matthews (talk) 17:34, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

General[edit]

The entry is, perhaps inevitably, somewhat limited, but it is surprising that no reference is made to Dr Helen Smailes' excellent monograph in the "Scottish Masters" series "13 : John Zephaniah Bell". Another source is an article in the Manchester City News of 30 September 1882, "JOHN ZEPHANIAH BELL". JZB was one of the seventeen children of William Bell, and one of his brothers, Robert Fitzroy Bell, had eighteen children by two wives - one of RFB's sons was Arthur Bell, founder of Arthur Bell & Sons of Perth, purveyors of Bell's whiskey. Amongst JZB's brothers Sir Sydney Smith Bell was perhaps more notable as a lawyer than as an author - see The South African Dictionary of Biography, and his Obituary Notice in The Times of 17th September 1879. If further information about this family is needed, as a direct descendant of JZB's father William I'd be happy to provide it.Babu2734 (talk) 12:58, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
