Recommend removal of material under Episcopal career section[edit]

While it is appropriate to discuss that he is a member of a certain order, the other information violates WP:NPOV as it asserts a POV. Additionally the other information about other bishops that may belong to this order come from a blog which states it has rumors in it. Blogs, unless written by an expert and that stick to WP:V and WP:RS data, are usually not allowed as citable sources. Recommend removal by another editor. If not done within 24 hours, I will remove it tomorrow. --Morenooso (talk) 17:00, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Speculation[edit]

On the bottom section of the article under Coadjutor of Los Angeles there is this statement. "Since the Archbishop of Los Angeles has traditionally been a cardinal, Gómez will likely be elevated to the College of Cardinals at a future consistory.[11] If so, he will be the only Hispanic cardinal in the United States." This is pure speculation seeing as Pope Benedict has yet to elevate Archbishop Donald Wuerl to the rank of cardinal. Pope Benedict has shown that he is changing the norms. Another example is that the pontiff has yet to elevate Archbishop Timothy Dolan as well. Inaccurate description of relationship[edit]

"As a bishop, however, he is no longer a member of the organization in the sense that he reports to the Pope and thus does not answer to the prelate in charge of Opus Dei like the other members do."

This is inaccurate on two accounts. First, faithful of Opus Dei are subject to the jurisdiction of their local ordinary (i.e. diocesan bishop in almost everyone's case - military personnel might be different). The faithful of the prelature depend on the prelate for indications regarding the living of their spiritual life and apostolate (matters in which all the members of a diocese are free to pursue according to their own conscience).

Second, Bishop Gomez still depends on the prelate of Opus Dei for indications regarding his personal spiritual life and apostolate. Bishop Gomez's handling of his diocesan affairs is independent of Opus Dei. He has the normal responsibilities and freedoms of any other diocesan bishop.

Technical clarification needed[edit]

"Gomez has said he is not a "member" of Opus Dei, but rather that he was ordained a priest in Opus Dei and that his spirituality reflects that background.[6]"

This statement by Gomez highlights a technical distinction. Opus Dei has no members. From the point of view of canon law, lay faithful of Opus Dei are members of a diocese or a military ordinariate. They are subject to the jurisdiction of the their ordinary (bishop) to the same extent as any other lay person.

The juridical status of priests of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross, especially ones who become bishops, I am not competent to elaborate on. No, he entered OD as a numerary (ordinary member) and then later was ordained a priest incardinated in Opus Dei. But when a priest of a diocese or personal prelature (effectively a diocese, but not organised by territory) becomes a bishop, his incardination ceases to exist. see: Catholic Hierarchy, affiliated bishops. He isn't under OD jurisdiction anymore since 23 Jan 2001 (but directly, as every bishop, under the Pope's). --92.75.27.133 (talk) 21:33, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
