Accents

None of the online sources, nor one of the printed sources,[1] use accents in the subject's name. What source do we have that uses the accents?   Will Beback  talk  21:38, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Prior to editting and wikiling this article, I am currently working on Diego de Borica and a citation to José Joaquín de Arrillaga. Borica's article is providing several references for all the subsequent works I editted. However, if you look at the history diff, you will notice his name appeared with the accents prior to my moving the article. In effect, I did not edit his article and then make the move. Veni, vici, movi.

All the cites I found for de Borica have the accents as well. But, there are some descrepancies about the de or from part of some of their names. Amerians, and I count myself in the generalization, I am about to make, did not find important to include the de or accents which is why descrepancies exist. I am being careful to avoid original research which is why all my edits are cited.

As you can see, Verdugo's article had the accents in its body prior to my move which is confirmed by citations in de Borica's citations (primarily the History of San Diego cites.

And while I am on the discrepancy discussion, depending on you count acting governors, the governors of las Californias might be incorrect. But, I will annotate that when I am done with de Borica and move past the next two articles I want to edit. I trust this helps. Thanks for the prompt reply. I've also left a message for the editor who created the page. There's a tension between what a persona may be known as in their native language versus what they're called in English. I understand the naming convention. However, Wikipedia is written not just for English speaking readers. Having names appear incorrectly also causes tension. Ghit searches will find names with and without accents. Wikipedia does not. It only suggests possible alternatives unless a redirect exists. I have seen a number of articles recently moved to accomodate accents and the de convention. It would be the equivalent of insisting that Hillary Rodham Clinton only appear as Hillary Rodham or Hillary Clinton. I am pretty sure without putting those name variants into the search box, redirects exist. I am not trying to use WP:OTHERSTUFF. I saw a discrepancy and acted upon. If I was WP:BOLD, so be it. At dinner, I thought this and there are several possibilites why the typical accents and tildes don't appear in old book/online articles: back in the day who had a Spanish keyboard? While those keys now appear on most keyboards, being able to combine them to produce a ñ or é is an art. I have a common doc file I keep Spanish characters with accents and tildes to use. It may be possible that the original editor didn't have access to those character sets or did not think to include it in the article title. Ronbo76 (talk) 00:49, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Move clarified

In editting Diego de Borica's article, I did a Wikipedia search for Verdugo's name with the accents I found in a citation to de Borica's article. The search came up empty. Wikipedia suggested the unaccented name. In looking at the body of Verdugo's article, the accents were already there and can be verified by the section above and article history. I did not edit the article and place accents in it. I just moved it. Ronbo76 (talk) 22:16, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
